DPS to Host Torch Run Kick-Off
Ceremony for Special Olympics Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa --
To kick off the 2017 Special Olympics’ Law Enforcement Torch Run, the Iowa Department of Public Safety (DPS) will host a torch lighting ceremony at the Oran Pape State Office Building.

Each year law enforcement agencies across Iowa and the United States work to recognize the extraordinary efforts and achievements of the athletes of Special Olympics. That is why several law enforcement agencies, including DPS, will run the torch from Des Moines to Ames.  Once in Ames, the torch will be used to ignite the Flame of Hope to start the Special Olympics Summer Games.

The Torch Run Final Leg will begin immediately following the kick-off ceremony from the Oran Pape State Office Building (DPS HQ) to Ames.  This final leg of the Law Enforcement Torch Run coincides with the beginning of the Special Olympics Iowa Summer Games in Ames.  The games run May 25-27, 2017.
