Officer Involved Shooting in Panora

PANORA, Iowa --
The Guthrie County Attorney’s office has issued the conclusion regarding the July 1, 2018, officer involved shooting fatality in Panora, Iowa.  Please see the attachment from the Guthrie County Attorney’s Office.

Previous release from 07/03/2018

The subject in the shooting has been identified as Joshua B. Reed, 26, of New Virginia, Iowa.  The autopsy of Reed was conducted today by the Office of the State Medical Examiner in Ankeny, Iowa.  The cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds and the manner of death was ruled homicide.

The Panora Police officer involved in the shooting is Officer Rock Armstrong.  Officer Armstrong has been an officer for 17 years.  Officer Armstrong is on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

Previous release from 07/02/2018

On Sunday, July 1, 2018, the Guthrie County Dispatch Center received a 911 call at approximately 7:19 pm in reference to a report of a male subject with a knife threatening people in an apartment complex. The Panora Police Department responded to an apartment building at 502 West Market Street in Panora.

Upon arriving at the address, law enforcement located a male subject in the apartment hallway.  The male subject confronted law enforcement with a knife.  Law enforcement ordered the subject to drop the knife several times but the male subject refused to drop the knife.  An officer with the Panora Police Department engaged the subject and fired his weapon striking the male subject.  The subject was given medical aid but later died from his injuries.

The body has been transported to the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner in Ankeny, Iowa, where an autopsy will be conducted.

The officer involved in this incident has been placed on paid administrative leave until the completion of the investigation.

The Panora Police Department is being assisted in the investigation by Agents from the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the Crime Scene Team from the DCI Criminalistics Laboratory, Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office, and the Iowa State Patrol.
