Webster County Officer-Involved Shooting

On January 1st, 2019, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation was asked to assist the Webster County Sheriff’s Office and Iowa State Patrol with an officer-involved shooting (see previous press release by Webster County Sheriff’s Office below).  The incident, which included a vehicle pursuit, started just outside Fort Dodge and ended near the intersection of Highway 175 and Oak Avenue in rural Webster County.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation determined several law enforcement agencies were involved in the pursuit and has identified the deceased as Matthew Hurley, age 45, of Wall Lake, Iowa.  The officers involved in the shooting were identified as Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Aaron Smidt and Calhoun County Deputy Chase Goodman.

The incident remains under investigation pending autopsy, toxicology and laboratory testing.  The results of the investigation will be forwarded to the Webster County Attorney’s Office for review
