ISP Asks Iowans To Stay Off Roads During Latest Winter Storm

Des Moines, IOWA --- The Iowa Department of Public Safety's Iowa State Patrol Division (ISP) is responding to accidents and calls for motorist assists during this latest winter storm in Iowa.  Travel conditions are extremely dangerous and travel is not recommended in the western half of Iowa or in the Des Moines metro area.  Roads in the eastern part of the state are 100% snow/ice covered.   Blowing snow is causing white-out conditions and while the pavement may look normal in some places, many motorists are encountering black ice.

ISP Releases Name Of Man Who Died In A Weather-Related Accident

Des Moines, IOWA --- The Iowa State Patrol today released the name of the man involved in a fatal accident Wednesday. Levi Diersen, 29, of Grimes died in an accident that occurred on Interstate 80/35 near 2nd Avenue in Des Moines. Troopers on the scene say snow and icy roadways contributed to the accident.

Law Enforcement Investigates Double Shooting Death In Leon

Leon, IOWA --- On Saturday, January 16, 2010, at 1207a.m., the Decatur County Sheriff’s Department received a 911 call reporting a shooting at 305 South Main Street in Leon.  Decatur County Deputies and Leon Police Officers responded and found two (2) adults deceased inside the home.  There were no signs of forced entry into the home.

Travelers Beware as Freezing Rain Heads into Iowa

Des Moines, IOWA --- Meteorologists are forecasting one-quarter to one-half inch of ice will accumulate over much of Iowa in the next 24 hours.  That translates into big trouble for motorists traveling the many roadways in the Hawkeye State.  The Iowa Department of Public Safety, Division of the Iowa State Patrol advises drivers to take extra precautions when ice glazes over our roadways.

DPS Releases Additional Information in I-80 Death Investigation

Jasper County, IOWA --- Law enforcement continues to investigate the death of a woman found dead along I-80 early this morning; however her identity has been verified.  The deceased is 27 year old Ravinne Pearl Conard of Des Moines, Iowa.  An autopsy will be conducted by the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s office in Ankeny, Iowa to determine the cause of death for Ms. Conrad.

Monona County, IOWA --- On Monday, January 25, 2010, at approximately 9:00 a.m., a series of multi-vehicle accidents occurred on I-29 southbound at the 125 mile marker in Monona County. The interstate at the time was 100% snow and ice covered and visibility was zero.

Public Encouraged To Check 511IA.org On Towing Restrictions

Des Moines, IOWA --- The Iowa Department of Public Safety, Division of the Iowa State Patrol advises Iowans with a vehicle that needs to be towed or removed from the roadway to first check the www.511ia.org website or call 511 to make sure there are no towing restrictions in the area your vehicle is located.  If there is not a towing restriction then the vehicle owner must call a towing company of their choice to be placed on the list for removal.

Iowa State Patrol Transports Emergency Blood Supply, Releases Storm Response Statistics

Des Moines, IOWA --- On January 25, 2010, the Iowa State Patrol was asked by Trinity Hospital in Fort Dodge to transport an emergency blood supply needed for a patient.  With help from the Iowa DOT snowplows, the Patrol was able to get the emergency supply through.  The recipient was an open heart surgery patient.

Des Moines, IOWA ---Travel is not advised in parts of Central Iowa according to the Iowa State Patrol. Motorists in Story, Jasper and northern Polk counties are experiencing blowing snow, low visibility, and slick roadways that are making travel treacherous. A towing restriction is in effect in these areas. High winds could cause major problems for motorists in high profile vehicles.

Montrose Man Arrest For Conspiring To Commit Murder

Montrose, IOWA --- Michael J. Cain, age 33, of Montrose, Iowa, has been arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit murder, a class “C” felony. Over the past several weeks, Mr. Cain has conspired with another individual to murder a Rock Island, Illinois man involved with Cain’s ex-girlfriend. Cain was arrested in Montrose, Iowa and is currently being housed at the Lee County Jail.

Law Enforcement Investigates Double Shooting in Chariton

Chariton, IOWA --- On February 10, 2010, at approximately 5:24 p.m., the Lucas County Dispatch Center received a 911 call in reference to a shooting that had occurred at 20968 475th in Chariton, Iowa.  The Lucas County Sheriff's office and the Chariton Police Department responded to the scene.  When officers arrived, one adult male victim was deceased and one juvenile female victim suffered a gunshot wound.

Update on DCI Criminal Investigation Into Officer Involved Shooting In Lee County

Keokuk, IOWA --- On Friday, March 19, 2010, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) presented its findings to Lee County Attorney Mike Short. Short determined that Detective Chris Chiprez and Investigator Kevin Glendening were returning fire to a deadly threat posed by Earl William Freeman, 51, of Burlington. The officers involved are cleared of any criminal wrong doing in the shooting of Freeman on March 17, 2010.

Pleasant Hill Officer Charged After Thursday Evening Crash

Pleasant Hill, IOWA --- Sergeant Daniel Herbert Edwards, 42, of the Pleasant Hill Police Department was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance, a simple misdemeanor, late Thursday, April 1, 2010. The charge stems from an investigation that was initiated after Sergeant Edwards was seen driving his patrol car erratically along U.S. 65 in Pleasant Hill before finally crashing the vehicle. Further investigation is being conducted into this incident by the Iowa State Patrol and the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement.

Van Meter Police Chief Charged

Van Meter, IOWA --- After a five month investigation, Van Meter Police Chief Michael A. Merritt is being charged with one count of Felonious Misconduct in Office, a Class D Felony, and one count of Insurance Fraud, a Class D Felony.  Merritt turned himself into a Division of Criminal Investigation agent this morning in Des Moines and was then transported to the Polk County Jail.

Man Found Injured on Bridge, Transported to Hospital

Indianola, IOWA--- At approximately 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 27, 2010, the Warren County dispatch received a 911 call with a report that a man was leaning over the side of the bridge on Hwy. 65 four miles north of Indianola. Sheriff’s deputies arrived to find an injured white male. The man was taken by ground ambulance to a Des Moines hospital.

Pleasant Hill, IOWA --- Today Sergeant Daniel Herbert Edwards, 42, of the Pleasant Hill Police Department turned himself in to the Division of Criminal Investigation and the Iowa State Patrol.  Edwards has been charged with Burglary 3rd, a class D Felony.  Earlier this week, Edwards was also charged with Operating While Intoxicated, First Offense, a serious misdemeanor.  These charges stem from an investigation that was initiated after Sergeant Edwards was seen driving his patrol car erratically along U.S. 65 in Pleasant Hill before finally crashing the vehicle.

Calhoun County Deaths Ruled Double Homicide/Suicide

Calhoun County, IOWA --- Autopsies performed on the bodies of three people, found inside a home in rural Calhoun County and a joint investigation by law enforcement show the manner of death for Paige Gallo and Heather Campbell is homicide.  Both women died from gunshot wounds.  Luke Schleisman also died of a gunshot wound and his manner of death has been ruled suicide.

'Ed Thomas Bill' Form Now Available For Iowa Law Enforcement

Put The Freeze On Home Heating Fires

Des Moines, IOWA --- Tragically, the life of a young Iowan was snuffed out this week when his home was set ablaze by the wood burning stove, used for heat in the cold of winter.  In 2008, heating equipment was involved in an estimated 66,100 home fires in the United States.  Four hundred and eighty people died and another 1,660 were injured in those fires.

Guardians of Innocence: Iowa Awarded More Than $460,000 To Fight Sexual Predators Targeting Children

Des Moines, IOWA --- With the support of Iowa's two U.S. Attorneys, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation's Cyber Crime and Sex Offender Registry Units have been awarded one-time federal grant monies totaling $468,990 to assist in pursuing, investigating, arresting, and prosecuting sexual predators who target children.

Iowa State Patrol Offers Holiday Travel Tips

Des Moines, IOWA--- The Iowa State Patrol will have extra troopers on the roads during the Christmas and New Year's holidays.  Troopers will be looking for drivers under the influence of drugs and alcohol, speeders, drivers following too close and other types of aggressive driving.  Troopers will also be looking out for seatbelt violations. Colonel Patrick Hoye, Chief of the Iowa State Patrol says, “Everyone needs to buckle up every time, no matter how short the trip.”

Blockton, Iowa Fire Victim Positively Identified

Blockton, IOWA --- Today the Iowa Department of Public Safety's Division of the State Fire Marshal is confirming the victim found dead in Monday's home fire in Blockton, Iowa has been positively identified as home owner, 74 year old Kenneth Leroy Nielsen. Additionally, the preliminary autopsy report indicates Nielsen died of smoke inhalation.
