Knoxville, IOWA --- Authorities are seeking the public’s assistance in locating a person wanted in connection with an arson fire to a building located at 3014 E. Main in Knoxville, Iowa.  The fire occurred to a former DHS government building after 5:00 am on December 25, 2011.

Allamakee County (Waukon), Iowa – On Wednesday, December 21, 2011, 32 year old Joshua Burke, an Allamakee County resident near the town of New Albin, Iowa, was charged with one count of Sexual Abuse in the Third Degree (Class C Felony), and one count of Lascivious Acts with a Child (Class C Felony).

Denison, IOWA --- On Wednesday, December 21, 2011, a complaint was filed in Crawford County charging Michael McKinnon with Theft in the First Degree, a Class C Felony; and Felonious Misconduct in Office, a Class D Felony.  McKinnon, 41, is a former Chief of the Denison Fire Department.

Forest City, IOWA --- The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is now releasing the names of the officers involved in the October 20, 2011 shooting incident in Forest City, Iowa.  The officers have been identified as Special Agent Chris Callaway, Special Agent Steve Peterson, and Forest City Officer Thaddeus Ellenbecker.

DCI Agents, Forest City Officer Involved in Shooting Incident

Forest City, IOWA --- Last night, October 20, 2011, in Forest City at approximately 6:15 PM, two agents from the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation were involved in an altercation with an off-duty Forest City Police Officer who was under investigation.  Following an interview with the off-duty officer, a struggle ensued which resulted in the officer being shot by one of the DCI agents.

Glenwood Man Arrested on Child Endangerment, Other Charges

Glenwood, IOWA--- Today 35 year old Jason Curtis of Glenwood, Iowa was arrested on a warrant for Child Endangerment, class "B" felony; Neglect of a Dependent Person, class "C" felony; and Willful Injury, class "C" felony.  The arrest of Mr. Curtis was executed as a result of an investigation conducted by the Glenwood Police Department and Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.

Bremer County, IOWA --- Today, agents with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) and Troopers with the Iowa State Patrol (ISP) arrested 31 year old Jeremy Eberhart of Sumner, Iowa.  Eberhart was charged with Theft in the 1st Degree, a Class C Felony and Felonious Misconduct in Office, a Class D Felony.

DCI Investigates Johnson County Death

Johnson County, IOWA --- On October 1, 2011, the Johnson County Sheriff's Office made a request to the Iowa County Sheriff's Office to arrest 26 year old Crystal Hawkins at a North English residence on a warrant/mittimus to serve 30 days in the Johnson County Jail. Upon her arrival and prior to being booked into jail, Ms. Hawkins became ill and was transported to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and admitted as a patient. On October 2, 2011, the Johnson County Medical Examine advised Ms. Hawkins died while being treated at the University of Iowa Hospitals. The Johnson County and Iowa County Sheriff's Offices requested the Division of Criminal Investigation conduct an independent investigation into the death of Ms. Hawkins.

Cambridge, IOWA --- Today, at approximately 12:30 PM, law enforcement with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and the Huxley Police Department arrested 39 year old Denny Allen Kalsem.  Kalsem is charged with First Degree Robbery.  He is currently being held in the Story County Jail on $50,000 cash or surety.

Floyd County Grand Jury Reviews Officer Involved Shooting

Floyd County, IOWA --- Today a Grand Jury in Floyd County has concluded its review of the officer involved shooting that took place on June 22, 2011 involving State Trooper Tyrel Williamson, State Trooper Mark Ades, and Floyd County Deputy Chris Myers.  The Grand Jury concluded there will be no charges filed regarding the actions of the officers involved in the shooting of the suspect, 30 year old John Pekrun of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin.

Des Moines, IOWA --- This evening law enforcement officers arrested 21 year old Travis Jeffrey Barker of Coon Rapids, Iowa. Barker is charged with Murder in the First Degree in connection with the death of 28 year old William Smith on Sunday, September 4, 2011.

Law Enforcement Officials Conduct Death Investigation in Coon Rapids, Iowa

Des Moines, IOWA --- On Saturday, September 3, 2011, approximately 1:00 p.m. police and paramedics were called to a residence in Coon Rapids for a male that was involved in an altercation.  The male was identified as 28 year-old William Smith.  Smith was taken to St. Anthony Regional Medical Center in Carroll for treatment and later flown to Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.  Smith was pronounced dead late Sunday afternoon, September 4, 2011.  An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday in Des Moines.

This pourable gel fuel can ignite unexpectedly and splatter onto people and objects nearby when it is poured into a decorative fire pot that is still burning.

STATE FIRE MARSHAL DIVISION WARNS OF DANGERS USING DECORATIVE “GEL FIRE POT”

Des Moines, IOWA --- The Iowa Department of Public Safety-State Fire Marshal Division urges citizens to use caution when lighting or burning decorative, gel-fueled fire pots.  Several people have been admitted to the University of Iowa Burn Unit with serious burns as a result of using decorative, gel fire pots.  Nationally, there have been over 37 reported accidents, with 23 of them injuring consumers.

Ames, IOWA --- The Iowa Fire Service Training Bureau and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) will host an in-classroom “train-the-trainer” session on Saturday, August 27, 2011 at the Training Bureau in Ames. DNA Confirms Identity of Deceased in Warren County Fire Case

Warren County, IOWA --- Autopsy tests have confirmed the remains of a deceased male found on July 31, 2011 in the burned home of Bill and Kay Wood, are that of 79 year old James "Bill" Wood. Autopsy results also indicate Bill Wood died of multiple gun shot wounds. The manner of death is considered homicide.

Decatur County, IOWA --- Arrest warrants were issued late Monday, July 18, 2011 for two men believed to be involved in the Saturday, July 16, 2011 home invasion of US Congressmen Leonard Boswell’s Decatur County farm.  One suspect is now in custody.  Law enforcement continues its efforts to locate the second suspect.

Black Hawk County, Iowa --- On December 1, 2010, at approximately 2:00 PM, 18 year old Justin Johnson, an inmate of the Black Hawk County Jail, notified a jail deputy that he was feeling ill.  The deputy entered the cell and found that Johnson was having difficulty breathing.  Jail staff requested an ambulance for Johnson and he was taken to Allen Hospital in Waterloo, where doctors declared him deceased.

Driver Found In Eastern Iowa Hit and Run

Tiffin, Iowa --- The Iowa State Patrol has located the driver involved in a February 13, 2011, hit and run on I-80 near Tiffin, Iowa. Shortly after the Department of Public Safety's Division of the Iowa State Patrol began soliciting information on the incident, 53 year old Randall Nelson of Otley, Iowa reported that he believed he may have been the driver involved. Evidence located at the scene confirmed that it was his vehicle.

Iowa State Patrol Requests Public Assistance

Tiffin, Iowa --- The Iowa State Patrol is asking for the public's help in locating a vehicle involved in a hit and run on Interstate 80 near Tiffin. Shortly before midnight on Saturday, February 12, 2011, Maxwell James Wallace, age 18, of Iowa city was killed after he was struck while walking in the westbound lanes, near mile marker 238. The location is just west of the I-80 and I-380 interchange and the city of Coralville.

Fire Marshal To Distribute Batteries For Operation Safe Senior At Annual State Fire School

Ames, IOWA --- In its efforts to cover more Iowans with working smoke detectors, this weekend the Office of the State Fire Marshal will distribute 13,000 nine-volt batteries to fire departments across the state. Local firefighters can participate in Operation Safe Senior when their department pledges to check for and install the free batteries in smoke detectors at the homes of seniors when dispatched for welfare checks, home hazard inspections and medical calls.

Victim Found Dead in Lee County Bar Fire Identified

Wever, IOWA --- Today, the State Medical Examiner released autopsy results on the deceased person found yesterday inside the burned Green Bay Tap in Wever, Iowa. The deceased has been positively identified as 47 year old Kenneth Allen Thomas of Denmark, Iowa. The cause of death has been ruled smoke inhalation.

One Found Dead in Lee County Bar Fire

Wever, IOWA --- At approximately 2:34 AM, emergency responders were called to the Green Bay Tap at 3546 170th St. in Wever, Iowa on report of a fire. Once on scene, firefighters battled the fire for several hours before the flames could be extinguished. Due to the extent of damage, the building is considered a total loss.

One Injured in Delaware County School Bus Crash

Sand Springs, IOWA --- One person was taken to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics after a vehicle, crossed the center line and struck a school bus in Delaware County. According to the Iowa State Patrol, 30 year old Shawna Beitz of Hopkinton was traveling north on Highway 38 when she lost control of her vehicle and slid into the path of the school bus.

DCI Investigates Child Death Case

Eagle Grove, IOWA --- On Friday, January 7, 2011, emergency personnel were called to 208 North Wright Avenue in Eagle Grove with a report of an unresponsive child.  Mikayla Valentine, age 5, was taken by air ambulance to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. She was pronounced dead at approximately 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 8, 2011.  Today, Monday, January 10, 2011, an autopsy is scheduled to be performed at the Johnson County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Spirit Lake, IOWA --- While actively fighting a house fire this morning, the Spirit Lake Fire Department was called out to a separate home fire at approximately 9:18 a.m. When firefighters arrive at 2610 Center Lake Drive in Spirit Lake the home was already fully engulfed with flames.
