Man Charged in Glenwood Woman's Death

Glenwood, IOWA – 24 year-old Chad Fortner of Council Bluffs was charged today with 2nd Degree Murder in the death of 47 year-old Carol Meston.

Autopsy Results for Northwood Death Investigation

Northwood, IOWA -- On September 22, 2013, at about 11:30 p.m., Deputy Isaac Short with the Worth County Sheriff’s Department was notified of a possible domestic assault in progress at 208 4th Street North in Northwood, Iowa, by a neighbor who heard a female screaming for help.  Deputy Short responded to the residence where he heard a female yelling and screaming from inside.  Deputy Short entered the residence and discovered a male subject, later identified as Michael Zubrod, age 44, severely beating a female victim, later identified as Rhonda Schukei, age 48, with a hammer and a pair of scissors and verbally threatening to kill her. 

Authorities have received the autopsy results for Michael Zubrod.

Police Investigate Body Found in Janesville

Janesville, IOWA – On December 10, 2013, a citizen discovered the body of a deceased adult male, later identified as 29 year-old Daniel Fike, on top of the frozen Cedar River under the Old Highway 218 Bridge in Janesville.

Corning, IOWA – Peter Wiley, age 32 of Creston, was charged Wednesday morning with Attempted Murder and Going Armed with Intent in Adams County from an incident that occurred Tuesday evening in Corning.

Notice of Capitol Training Exercise for Emergency Responders

Des Moines, IOWA --  On December 12, 2013, the Iowa Department of Public Safety in partnership with many local, state, and federal agencies, will execute a training exercise at the State of Iowa Capitol. This exercise will center on effective response and resolution to incidents which involve a suspicious package with unknown biological or chemical material and also involve an active shooter scenario.

State Fire Marshal Warns Home Heating Fires Increase During the Winter

Des Moines, IOWA --- The Iowa Department of Public Safety reminds Iowans home fires spike in the winter months of December through February.  The noticeable increase in home heating fires and fatal fires follows the cold temperatures.  Many home heating fires could be avoided with an ounce of prevention.  State Fire Marshal investigators report placing heaters too close to combustible objects like furniture and blankets as well as leaving heaters unattended are the primary reasons for portable heater fires.

Orange City Woman Arrested in Connection with Death of Three-Year Old

Orange City, IOWA --- On Tuesday, October 29, 2013, Rochelle Sapp, age 33, of Orange City, Iowa, was providing day care services at her residence to three-year-old Autumn Elgersma, also of Orange City. An incident occurred in Sapp’s home which resulted in Autumn being hospitalized with severe head trauma. Autumn was initially treated for her injuries at the Orange City Hospital, but because of the severity of her injuries, she was subsequently airlifted to Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Autumn died as a result of her injuries on October 31, 2013.

Orange City, IOWA --- A multi-agency press conference has been scheduled for 12:15 p.m. today, December 5, 2013, in the Board of Supervisors room, lower level, Sioux County Courthouse, 210 Central Avenue SW, Orange City, Iowa. The press conference will be in reference to the death of three-year-old Autumn Elgersma of Orange City who died on October 31, 2013. Sioux County Attorney Coleman J. McAllister, Iowa DCI Special Agent in Charge Mitch Mortvedt, and Orange City Police Chief Jim Pottebaum will be providing updated information.

Names Released in Officer-Involved Shooting

Council Bluffs, IOWA -- Law enforcement officials state that 27 year-old Michael Lee of Carter Lake was shot while trying to elude Iowa State Patrol Trooper Tim Sieleman.  Trooper Sieleman was attempting to stop him for not having license plates on a Dodge Ram Pick-up. Trooper Sieleman, a 16 year veteran of the patrol, has been placed on paid administrative leave for the duration of the investigation per departmental policy. Lee remains hospitalized recovering from his non-life threatening injuries.

Autopsy Findings Final in Death of 5 year-old Dominic Elkins

Logan, Iowa – The Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner has released its findings in the death of 5 ½ year old Dominic Elkins.  The medical examiner determined that Elkins’ cause of death was blunt force head injuries and drowning.  His death has been ruled a homicide.

Information was received that Courtni Thomas, who was wanted for homicide in the death of a 23 year-old female, was possibly crossing the Missouri/Iowa border on Interstate 29.

Gladbook, Iowa -- At 9:10 a.m. on Thursday October 31, 2013, the Garwin/Gladbrook Fire Departments were dispatched to a residential house explosion and subsequent fire at 1207 230th Street in rural Galdbrook. The Tama County Sheriff’s Department, Green Mountain Fire, Toledo Fire, Gladbrook Ambulance, and Toledo Ambulance also responded to the scene.

Orange City Woman Arrested in Connection With Serious Injury to Three-Year-Old Child

Orange City, IOWA -- On October 29, 2013, officers with the Sioux Falls Police Department, the Orange City Police Department, and the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office responded to Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls to investigate a report of possible child abuse. Officers found a three-year-old Orange City girl with serious head injuries including a fractured skull and brain trauma. The Orange City Police Department requested the assistance of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation to further investigate the report of child abuse.

DCI Criminalist Supervisor Bob Monserrate Presented Prestigious August Vollmer Award from International Association of Chiefs of Police

Des Moines, IOWA --- The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is proud to announce that Laboratory Criminalist Supervisor Bob Monserrate has received the prestigious International Association of Chiefs of Police August Vollmer Award for Excellence in Forensic Science.  Monserrate received this award on Saturday, October 19th, 2013 during the IACP award luncheon held during the IACP Conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Criminalist Supervisor Monserrate was selected as one of four recipients of this prestigious award.  The other three recipients of the award were from Canada (2) and New Zealand, leaving Monserrate as the only US forensic scientist to receive this award.

Skeletal Remains Identified

Positive identification has been made on the skeletal remains that was discovered on October 11th along the I-480 bridge in Council Bluffs.  The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation worked in association with the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office, who used known dental records to identify the remains as 21 year old Chance Fletcher of Omaha.

Local Attorney Faces Felony Charges

Spencer, IOWA -- On Thursday, October 10th, 2013, arrests warrants were issued for 60 year-old Ney Mcdaniel, charging him with Ongoing Criminal Conduct, (Class B Felony), Theft in the First Degree, (Class C Felony), and Fraudulent Practice in the First Degree, (Class C felony).  Mcdaniel is a former contract defense attorney for the State of Iowa Public Defenders Office.

Woodbine Fire Investigation of Possible Arson

The State Fire Marshal Division, along with the Woodbine Police Department, has been investigating the cause for the fire that occurred on Thursday, September 26, 2013, to Ellen's Flower Shop located at 413 Walker Street, Woodbine, Iowa. The investigation has revealed that the fire may have been intentionally set to the west wall of the flower shop adjacent to the alley that runs north and south behind the building.

This is due in part to an increase in cooking and heating fires. Tama, Iowa Homicide Arrest: Ginger Jefferson

Tama, Iowa --On September 25, 2013, the body of Kerry Jefferson was found inside her residence at 104 Harmon Street, Tama, Iowa.  The body was discovered after Tama Police arrived at the residence to make an arrest of a subject on an unrelated matter.  Following consultation with Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office and the Tama County Attorney, Brent Heeren, it was determined probable cause existed to obtain a warrant for the arrest of Ginger Jefferson.

Three Individuals Arrested In Connection with Ft. Madison Shooting

Ft. Madison, Iowa - On September 23, 2013, at 3:08pm, Ft. Madison Police responded to a report of a gunshot near the alley of the 1400 block between Avenues F and G. Since that time, the Ft. Madison Police Department, Lee County Sheriff’s Office, Burlington Police Department and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation have continued to investigate the shooting.  On September 26, 2013, three individuals were arrested and charged in connection with the incident.

Des Moines, Iowa -- An autopsy has been completed on Rockwell City police officer, 37 year old Jamie Buenting.  The Iowa State Medical Examiner's Office has ruled that the death of Officer Buenting was caused by a gunshot wound to the chest and the manner of death will be certified as homicide.

Correction: LAW ENFORCEMENT TO HEIGHTEN TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT THIS LABOR DAY WEEKEND

Suspect Still at Large, Night Patrols to Increase in Taylor County

Bedford, IOWA --- Law enforcement in southern Iowa will continue searching in and around rural Taylor County through the daylight hours. Officers are looking for Rodney Eugene Long, a suspect in Sunday night's shooting and pursuit. Once night falls, search efforts on the ground will halt. Night patrols in the area of 265th Avenue and Highland Ave will however be increased. Additional State Troopers and Deputies will regularly travel the area, looking for Long and remaining available to local residents.

DCI Identifies Officer in Shooting, Continues Search for Suspect

Bedford, IOWA --- As the search for the suspect in Taylor County continues, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) confirms the Sheriff's Deputy who was shot late Sunday night is 33 year old Dan Wyckoff. Wyckoff, a two year veteran of the Sheriff's Office, remains hospitalized, but is in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries.

BEDFORD, IOWA --- Law enforcement officials are looking for an escapee from the Clarinda Correctional Facility, Rodney Eugene Long.  Officers believe Long is the individual who shot a Taylor County deputy late Sunday, August 18, 2013 and subsequently led law enforcement on a 40 minute pursuit.

Northwood, IOWA --- After the completion of an autopsy and notification of family, law enforcement are releasing the additional information surrounding an August 5, 2013 incident in Worth County, Iowa. Authorities confirm the deceased female is 30 year old Justina Marie Smith of Northwood, Iowa. Additionally, today's autopsy revealed that Smith died as a result of multiple sharp force injuries. The manner of death is considered homicide.

I-80 Challenge Concludes Across the Nation

Des Moines, IOWA --- Eleven State Police/Highway Patrol Agencies concluded the eight day effort to eliminate fatalities across the nation along the 2900 miles of Interstate 80 at midnight on July 31, 2013.  The Iowa Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau has received information indicating two fatalities occurred during the eight day enforcement and education program.  These fatalities occurred in Nebraska and Ohio.  Fortunately, Iowa did not experience a fatal collision during the I-80 Challenge.

Law Enforcement Investigate Found Body in Webster County

Webster County, IOWA --- On July 10, 2013, at 5:40 PM, the Webster County Telecommunications Center received a call in regards to possible human remains found in the roadside ditch in the 2500 mile of Madison Avenue in Webster County. Webster County Deputies responded to the location and did find human remains of an unidentified white, adult male. The Webster County Medical Examiner was contacted and the remains were sent to the Iowa State Medical Examiner's Office for identification and cause of death.

No Evidence of Foul Play in Inmate Death, DCI and Medical Examiner Continue Investigation

Woodbury County, IOWA --- The State Medical Examiner’s Office conducted an autopsy of Anthony R. Josta on Thursday, March 28, 2013 at their office in Ankeny, Iowa.  Preliminary autopsy results indicate there is no evidence of foul play related to Josta’s death.  The cause and manner of death will be determined once toxicology tests are completed.  Those test results could take six to eight weeks.

Pacific Junction Man Arrested for Death of Child

Pacific Junction, IOWA --- Today, 22 year old Colby Puckett of Pacific Junction was arrested and charged with 1st Degree Murder for the death of 13 month old Aliyanna May.  Investigators have determined that Puckett was the only adult with Aliyanna at the time she sustained injuries to her head and eyes.  Puckett is currently being held at the Mills County Jail.  His bond has been set at $1,000,000.00.
