Lucas Death Investigation

LUCAS, Iowa -- On September 17, 2018, the Lucas County Dispatch Center received a 911 call in reference to a shooting that had occurred at 14654 467th Street in Lucas, Iowa.  Upon arriving at the residence, Lucas County deputies were unable to make contact with any individuals inside the residence.  Deputies waited for a Tactical Team before entering the residence.  Upon entering the residence, law enforcement discovered the body of a deceased male and a deceased female.

Information Released in Vinton Officer Involved Shooting

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The suspect in the Vinton shooting incident was identified by Benton County Sheriff’s Office release, dated September 8, 2018, as Lyle Arthur Fowler JR, age 43, and is currently being held in the Benton County Jail.

Theft in the First Degree

GRANGER, Iowa -- On January 31, 2018, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, with the assistance of the Office of Auditor of State, began providing law enforcement assistance in an investigation into a string of suspicious financial transactions at the Woodward-Granger Community School District.

2018 Farm Progress Show Traffic Information

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Iowa State Patrol is preparing for the 2018 Farm Progress Show and asking Iowans to do the same! The show runs from Tuesday, August 28th through Thursday, August 30th and will be held at the permanent site located along Iowa 17, just north of U.S. 30 in Boone County. Organizers anticipate 20,000 vehicles will travel to Boone County each day, with an attendance nearing 200,000 during the three-day event.

Preliminary Autopsy Results Available in Poweshiek County Case

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Iowa State Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy yesterday, August 22, 2018, on the body confirmed to be Mollie Tibbetts, and drew some preliminary conclusions.

Statement from Family of Mollie Tibbetts

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Mollie Tibbetts disappeared on July 18, 2018, while jogging in or near Brooklyn, Iowa.  After more than a month of searching, investigators located her body in a farm field in rural Poweshiek County on August 21, 2018.  An autopsy is being conducted, but results will not be available immediately. Charges were filed against Cristhian Bahena Rivera, who will appear in Poweshiek County District Court at 1:00 p.m. on August 22, 2018.

Charges Filed in Tibbetts Disappearance

POWESHIEK COUNTY, Iowa -- A first-degree murder charge was filed today in connection with the disappearance of Mollie Tibbetts, who was last seen jogging in Brooklyn, Iowa, on July 18, 2018.  A complaint and affidavit names Cristhian Bahena Rivera, 24, who resides in rural Poweshiek County, in the charge of Murder in the First Degree.

Notice of Press Conference in Regards to Mollie Tibbetts Investigation

MONTEZUMA, Iowa -- Earlier today a body was located by law enforcement authorities in rural Poweshiek County.  Investigators are working to confirm the identity and will have more information available at the 4:00 PM press conference.  There will be no further information released from law enforcement until the press conference.

Update - Officer Involved Shooting in Creston

CRESTON, Iowa -- The name of the suspect in the shooting has been identified as Christopher J. Cameron, 31, of Creston, Iowa.  An Autopsy was completed by the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner on August 15, 2018.  The final autopsy report is still pending.

DES MOINES, Iowa -- It is August in Iowa… State Fair excitement, schools beginning a new year, and then, right around the corner will be Labor Day – the traditional end of summer.  This is one of the busiest travel times of the year as many people try and squeeze in one more vacation destination. Others will host or attend end-of-summer social events where alcohol will be served.  However you decide to observe the end of summer remember this:  it is NEVER okay to drink and drive! If your plans include activities where alcohol will be served make sure you have a plan before you arrive on how you will be getting home.

CRESTON, Iowa -- On Monday, August 13, 2018, the Union County Dispatch Center received a 911 call at approximately 11:55 p.m. in reference to a report of a male subject with a gun sitting on a bench in McKinley Park in Creston, Iowa. The Creston Police Department and the Union County Sheriff’s office responded to McKinley Park.

Demonstration of Statewide Interoperability Radio System

DES MOINES, Iowa -- This morning, Governor Kim Reynolds demonstrated the statewide interoperable communications radio network at the Iowa State Fair. The demonstration was conducted at 9:30 a.m., in front of the Hall of Law.  Governor Reynolds demonstrated how the statewide system can be used to communicate with many different organizations.

Update: Victim and Suspect Identified

LEE COUNTY, Iowa -- On August 5, 2018, at approximately 10:42 AM, the Lee County Sheriff's Office was contacted reference a deceased female found on a gravel road located on 235th Avenue, south of West Point, Iowa, in Lee County.  She has been identified as Sadie Alvarado (age 20) of Muscatine, Iowa.  Later in the evening, the Lee County Attorney’s office was briefed on the facts and circumstances of the investigation and filed charges on Damian HAMANN (age 28) of Morning Sun, Iowa.  HAMANN has been charged with Leaving the Scene of an Accident Resulting in a Death under Iowa Criminal Code 321.261(4); a Class D Felony.  HAMANN turned himself into the Lee County Sheriff’s Office on August 5, 2018.

Her last known article of clothing is believed to be dark colored running shorts, a pink sports top and running shoes, color unknown.

Iowa MIssing Juvenile Numbers Remain Steady

DES MOINES, Iowa -- In light of the missing person investigation of Mollie Tibbetts, concerns have come to light about the number of juveniles reported missing in Iowa in recent weeks.  In FY 2017 4,311 juveniles were reported missing to The Missing Person Information Clearinghouse.  This is an average of approximately 12 juveniles a day.  The vast majority of which are found or returned home within 24 hours. Typically these cases are runaway situations. The number of missing juveniles reported in recent weeks is in line with historical numbers.

Arrest in Death Investigation of 5 Year-Old in Ottumwa

OTTUMWA, Iowa -- On July 19, 2018, at approximately 3:22 p.m., the Ottumwa Police Department received a 911 call reporting an unresponsive five year-old female at a residence located at 127 North James Street in Ottumwa.  Police and Fire responded to the residence.  The child was transported to Ottumwa Regional Health Center where she was pronounced deceased. The Ottumwa Police Department requested assistance of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation with the death investigation.

Media Advisory - Free Hands-On Advanced Driver Training Clinics Coming to Des Moines as Part of 2018 Summer Tour

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Free hands-on driver training that focuses on helping young drivers improve their skills in four key areas that are critical factors in more than 60 percent of vehicle crashes: hazard recognition, vehicle handling, and speed and space management. The program also focuses heavily on distracted and impaired driving. The Drugged, Drunk and Hangover Suits are designed to be used with teens and parents to simulate the effects of impaired driving.

Update - Monona County Deceased Person Investigation

CASTANA, Iowa -- On June 26, 2018, co-workers of Cheryl Stowe contacted the Monona County Sheriff’s Office and requested that a welfare check be conducted at Cheryl Stowe’s residence because she did not show up for work that day.  Monona County Deputies and Iowa State Troopers responded to the rural address of 13797 Oak Avenue, which lies between the towns of Ticonic and Castana, in North Central Monona County.  Deputies and Troopers were not able to locate Cheryl Stowe at her residence.

WASHINGTON, Iowa -- On July 11, 2018, at approximately 10:00 PM, Clarence Dean Pedersen (age 64) of Washington, Iowa, was taken into custody pursuant to an arrest warrant for Murder in the First Degree under the Iowa Criminal Code 707.2(1)(A).

WASHINGTON, Iowa

The Washington Police Department and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation have identified the decedent as Ed E. Jones (age 70) of Washington, Iowa.  Jones’ death is considered suspicious and an autopsy will be scheduled to help determine the cause and manner of death.   The investigation is ongoing and no additional information will be released at this time.

Suspicious Death Investigation

WASHINGTON, Iowa -- On July 11, 2018, at approximately 7:56 AM, Washington Police Department responded a 911 call reference a suspicious death in the apartment complex located at 601 West Adams.  Soon afterwards, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation was called to assist with the investigation.  The name of the decedent will be released upon notification of the family.  The investigation is ongoing and no additional information will be released at this time.

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Interstate 29 hazmat scene was cleared and the interestate was re-opened to traffic around 11:00 p.m. last night. The carrier involved was Landstar Transport Logistics out of Rockford, Illinois.

Hazmat Spill Closes a Portion of Interstate 29

DES MOINES, Iowa -- At approximately 1230hrs a semi hauling hazardous material was flagged down by a motorist that witnessed a liquid coming from the trailer at the 86mm of I-29. Iowa State Patrol Troopers arrived and accessed the situation. The liquid material was deemed hazardous and the Interstate was shut down both north and south bound.

Texting While Driving Tickets Soar

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Iowa State Patrol has issued 6 times more citations for texting while driving in the past year, after a new law allows law enforcement officers to stop drivers who are texting. This past year, Troopers issued 1,131 citations for texting while driving.  That is up from 182 citations the year before.

PANORA, Iowa -- The subject in the shooting has been identified as Joshua B. Reed, 26, of New Virginia, Iowa.  The autopsy of Reed was conducted today by the Office of the State Medical Examiner in Ankeny, Iowa.  The cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds and the manner of death was ruled homicide.

PANORA, Iowa -- On Sunday, July 1, 2018, the Guthrie County
Dispatch Center received a 911 call at approximately 7:19 pm in
reference to a report of a male subject with a knife threatening people
in an apartment complex. The Panora Police Department responded
to an apartment building at 502 West Market Street in Panora.

Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Fourth of July is a day of celebration in the United States.  Families get together for picnics and fireworks which usually requires traveling either long or short distances.  With increased road use and the possibility of increased alcohol consumption, the risk of traffic crashes rise.  An analysis by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety showed that on average, more people die in motor vehicle crashes on July Fourth than any other day of the year.  The study found that motorcycles and alcohol were both big contributors.

Monona County Deceased Person Investigation

CASTANA, Iowa -- On June 26, 2017, the Monona County Sheriff’s Office received a request for a welfare check on Cheryl Stowe (age 66) of rural Castana.  Deputies conducted a welfare check and ultimately made contact with a Stowe’s grandson, Eliot Stowe; however Cheryl Stowe was not located at her residence.  Eliot Stowe was arrested on an outstanding arrest warrant for an unrelated matter.

-- On June 1st, 2018, at approximately 1:13 p.m. the Pilot Grove Saving Bank in Packwood, Iowa, placed a call to the Jefferson County Law Enforcement Center reporting a robbery.

Human Remains Found in Rural Mason City

DES MOINES, Iowa -- On May 20th, 2018, the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call at approximately 1:07 p.m. regarding human remains found in the 22000 block of 275th Street in rural Mason City.  Deputies from Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office arrived on scene a short time later and requested the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation for assistance at the scene.  Investigators collected the skeletal remains and they were transported to the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office in Ankeny.  An autopsy was performed on May 23, 2018.  The results of the autopsy are not currently being released.

Iowa State Patrol to Participate in Nationwide Crash Awareness and Reduction Effort (CARE)  May 25-28, 2018

DES MOINES, Iowa -- This Memorial Day holiday weekend, the Iowa Department of Public Safety's (DPS) Iowa State Patrol (ISP) will have increased patrol efforts on Iowa roadways with the main focus on speed and distracted driving. The Crash Awareness and Reduction Effort is a national effort to increase officer presence on Interstate and U.S. Highways across the nation during specific high crash periods.

Deaths Ruled as Apparent Murder/Suicide

BELLE PLAINE, Iowa -- Investigators have concluded their investigation and based on evidence collected at the GERLEMAN residence, interviews of Union Pacific Railroad employees, video footage from the Union Pacific engine and a multitude of a sundry interviews, the conclusion is GERLEMAN committed suicide and pulled her eight year old son into the path of the train, thus killing him as well.  Evidence at the impact site indicates GERLEMAN waited near the railroad tracks for the Union Pacific train to approach.  GERLEMAN and her son Henry can be seen on video crossing the tracks and as the train draws near, GERLEMAN returns to the center of the tracks and at the last moment pulls Henry into the path of the train.

CHANGE HABITS TO SAVE LIVES

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Beginning May 21 and until June 3, 2018 State and local law enforcement agencies across the United States will be stepping up enforcement with the Click It or Ticket campaign.  This concentrated effort will be on the lookout for motorists who aren’t wearing their seat belts.  Click It or Ticket is not just about writing traffic tickets; it’s about saving lives.  In 2016, the last year in which the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has information, there were 10,428 unbuckled passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes in the United States.  That number is more than the population of Grimes, IA and of 99.5 percent of Iowa’s towns and cities.

First Degree Murder Arrest

BELLEVUE, Iowa -- On Sunday, December 25, 2016, the Bellevue Police Department (BPD) was called to the residence of James Michael Remakel located at 606 South Riverview Drive.  Upon arrival, law enforcement found a door which appeared to have been forced open.  Once inside, Remakel was found deceased in his residence.  Bellevue Police requested assistance from the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) with the suspicious death investigation.

CENTERVILLE, Iowa -- On Saturday, May 5, 2018, the Centerville Police Department and Centerville Fire Department responded to a fire at 828 South Park Avenue in Centerville.  A body was located in the residence and identified as 51-year-old Timothy Pasa.

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The subjects involved in the Belle Plaine train/pedestrian accident have been identified as; Teresa Catherine GERLEMAN (age 36) and her son, Henry FIELDS (age 8) both of Belle Plaine, Iowa.  The Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner has scheduled the autopsies for the aforementioned on Thursday, May 10, 2018.  No additional information will be released pending the autopsy results.

Suspicious Deaths Being Investigated by the DCI and Belle Plaine Police Department

Belle Plaine, Iowa -- On May 4, 2018, at approximately 4:57 AM, the Belle Plaine Police Department (BPPD) responded to the 9th Street railroad crossing reference a train/pedestrian accident.  Upon arrival, BPPD located two deceased individuals, an approximately 35 year old Caucasian female and an approximately 8 year old Caucasian male.  The names of the two decedents will not be released until they have been positively identified and family of the decedents notified.  Union Pacific Railroad is cooperating with the investigation.

Update on Body Found in Rural Davis County

BLOOMFIELD, Iowa -- The investigation into the death of Sharon Moritz has been completed by the Davis County Sheriff’s office and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.  The Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner has finalized the autopsy results for Moritz.  The cause of death was probable smoke inhalation and thermal injuries and the manner of death has been ruled a suicide.

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation has identified the deceased male subject involved in the officer-involved shooting in Moorland, Iowa as Joshua Lee Ewing, age 26, of Carroll, Iowa.  An autopsy is scheduled with the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office for Tuesday, May 1st, 2018.

DCI Investigating Rural Moorland Officer Involved Shooting

DES MOINES, Iowa -- On April 29, 2018, an Iowa State (ISP) Trooper responded to a motorist assist in the 2300 block of Carter Avenue, in rural Moorland, Iowa, just west of Fort Dodge, Iowa.  Upon arrival, the Trooper encountered a male and female involved in a dispute and the male subject pointed and fired a handgun at the Trooper.   The male subject and the ISP Trooper exchanged several rounds at each other and the male subject was subsequently shot and killed.  The Trooper was not injured.  The initial investigation revealed the male suspect had fired several shots into his own vehicle prior to the Trooper arriving.

Update: Bailiff and Suspect Identified

DAVENPORT, Iowa -- On April 25, 2018, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) was asked to assist the Scott County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) and the Davenport Police Department (DPD) reference a disturbance which had taken place outside the Scott County Courthouse.  DCI’s role was to investigate the discharging of a service weapon by a responding bailiff.   As previously mentioned in a past press release, two bailiffs and a Davenport police officer responded to the disturbance.  Adam Demarcus LAFRENTZ (29 yrs old) of Davenport, Iowa was noncompliant with the directives and orders given to him by the bailiffs and the police officer.  During the altercation, Bailiff Timothy HUTCHESON, with approximately 14 years of service with the SCSO, discharged his service weapon, firing one round.  LEFRENTZ was not struck by the bullet nor were the bailiff’s or police officer.  Additionally, a less lethal device was used by the assisting bailiff which seemingly had little to no effect on LEFRENTZ.

Consumer Fireworks Online Licensing Portal Open for 2018

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The State Fire Marshal Division opened its online licensing portal for consumer fireworks March 1, 2018 and is currently accepting applications for licenses for the retail sales of consumer fireworks.  Retailers are encouraged to submit their applications early so that the application can be processed and the license issued prior to the first day for sales of consumer fireworks.  A total of 664 consumer fireworks sales licenses were issued in 2017.

Iowa State Patrol Arrests Another Murder Suspect

DES MOINES, Iowa -- For the second time in less than a week, an Iowa State Trooper has arrested a suspect wanted for an out-of-state murder. This morning, a member of the Iowa State Patrol’s Vehicle Theft Unit checked the license plate of a vehicle in a business parking lot in Davenport that was confirmed stolen out of Wichita, Kansas.

High Speed Pursuit Leads to the Arrest of Murder Suspect by State Patrol

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Iowa State Patrol attempted to stop a vehicle yesterday on Hwy 218 near Nashua around 9:30 am for a speed violation. The driver, 21 year old Devon Cooke of Miami, Florida, fled at speeds over 100mph and drove at oncoming traffic. He was apprehended after a short foot pursuit when his tires became deflated from a set of stop sticks deployed by officers.

Driver Charged in NE Iowa Fatal Crash

DES MOINES, Iowa -- On Monday, March 19, 2018, the Iowa State Patrol and the Clayton Sheriff’s Office working jointly arrested Kory Allen Doeppke of Elkader, Iowa.  Doeppke was arrested on two counts of Homicide by Vehicle, for causing the deaths of Brady Edwards and Izaiah Drinkwater.  These deaths are a result from a motor vehicle collision which occurred on Friday, February 16, 2018.  Kory Allen Doeppke is being held at the Clayton County Law Enforcement Center on a $20,000.00 bond.

DES MOINES, Iowa -- On March 14, 2018, members of the Oskaloosa Police Department arrested Luke VanHemert, 23, of 603 North 3rd Street, in Oskaloosa, Iowa. VanHemert was charged with one count of Murder in the Second Degree. VanHemert is currently being held in the Mahaska County Jail. VanHemert was taken into custody without incident at his place of employment in Pella, Iowa. VanHemert is being held on $500,000 cash only.

Cresco Death Investigation - UPDATE

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Iowa Division of Investigation has identified the subjects involved in a shooting incident in Cresco, Iowa, on March 1st, 2018.  Officers had responded to a 911 call reporting a shooting at 700 South Elm Street #32 in Cresco, Iowa.  Upon arrival, officers were confronted by Brian Fullhart, age 34, at the residence who was uncooperative with officers and threatening to shoot officers.  Fullhart was eventually taken into custody at 6:45 am.  Officers then entered the residence and located the body of a deceased female.  That female was later identified as Fullhart’s wife, Zoanne Fullhart, age 34, of Decorah, Iowa.

Cresco Death Investigation

DES MOINES, Iowa -- On March 1st, 2018, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation was asked to assist the Cresco Police Department with a death investigation.  The Cresco Police Department had been called to the area of 700 S. Elm Street at about 1:30 am regarding a shots fired call.  Officers arrived and located a subject barricaded in a residence near this location.  The Cresco Police Department and Iowa State Patrol negotiated with this individual for several hours and were able to take him into custody without incident.  Officers then located the deceased individual inside the residence.  This investigation is on-going.

Search Warrant Obtained for Monticello and Delhi Residences

DES MOINES, Iowa -- On February 22, 2018, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation obtained a state search warrant for the residences of Greg Stephen in Monticello and Delhi, Iowa.  The search warrant affidavit states that a device had previously been obtained from Stephen’s  Monticello residence and was examined by law enforcement agents.  The affidavit states the device was found to contain video clips believed to depict young, non-adult disrobed male individuals.  Based on the investigation, the male individuals do not appear to be aware they were being recorded.

UPDATE - Body Found in Rural Davis County

BLOOMFIELD, Iowa -- The human remains that were found in the burned out car have been identified as Sharon Kay Moritz, 63, from Northwood, Iowa.  The car that Moritz was located in was registered to her.  The car was a 2006 White Chevrolet 4 door Impala.  The investigation found that Moritz has family from the Davis County area.  The full autopsy results are still pending and will not completed for approximately 4 to 6 weeks.

Death Investigation Results

BURLINGTON, Iowa -- On January 12, 2018, the Burlington Police Department was called to investigate the discovery of a dead body in the basement of 704 S. Central Avenue, Burlington, IA. The decedent was identified as fifty three (53) year old Ricky Dean WIXOM.   On October 10, 2017, prior to the discovery of WIXOM, his family filed a missing person’s report.  On January 12, 2018, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation was called in to assist with the investigation.

Body Found in Rural Davis County

BLOOMFIELD, Iowa -- On Saturday, January 27, 2018, the Davis County Law Enforcement center received a 911 call around 10:30am in reference to a burned out car in rural Davis County. A local farmer had discovered the vehicle.  Deputies arrived in the area of 27772 Vetch Avenue, Pulaski, Iowa, and discovered a burned out vehicle.  The vehicle was located in a farm lane off a dirt road.  Upon inspecting the vehicle, law enforcement discovered human remains inside the vehicle.

Authorities Asking for Public's Assistance in Identifying Individuals

DES MOINES, Iowa -- On January 28th, 2018, at about 1:30 am, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a shooting at the rest stop located at exit 159 in Dows, Iowa.  The shooting victim was transported to North Iowa Mercy Hospital for treatment.  The incident is being investigated by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, the Iowa State Patrol, the Wright County Sheriff’s Office, and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.

UPDATE - DCI Investigating Incident with Officer Involved Shooting

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation has identified the subject involved in this incident as Jihad Merrick, age 29, of Minneapolis, MN.  An autopsy has been conducted by the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office and the results of that examination and the investigation will be forwarded to the Bremer County Attorney’s Office for review.  This incident occurred on Highway 218 southbound at the 211.5 mile marker, which is inside Bremer County.

Suspect Arrested After Brief Stand-Off With Shots Fired

Des Moines, IOWA -- Iowa State Patrol Troopers and local law enforcement officers responded to a 911 call of  “shots fired” along Interstate I-80 East of the 265 mile marker at the rest area. The suspect then drove west bound and exited at the 265 exit where he fired more rounds at motorists at the BP gas station. Troopers encountered the suspect on County RD X46 where they engaged him and exchanged gunfire. After a brief stand-off Troopers/Officers were able to take the suspect into custody. No injuries were sustained by the suspect or law enforcement.
