Officers' Names Released in Burlington Officer-Involved Shooting

BURLINGTON, Iowa -- The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation has conducted the interviews of the law enforcement officers involved in the September 11, 2019, shooting of Caleb Daniel Peterson.  Three officers have been identified as having discharged their weapons in the direction of Peterson.  Peterson sustained one gunshot wound.  Said wound was to the mid torso which resulted in his death.

Authorities Release Name of Decedent

BURLINGTON, Iowa -- The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation has identified the individual involved in this morning’s shooting as Burlington resident, Caleb Daniel Peterson (20).  An autopsy has been scheduled for Thursday September 12, 2019, with the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner in Ankeny, Ia.  No additional information will be released at this time.

Burlington Officer-Involved Shooting

BURLINGTON, Iowa -- On September 11, 2019, at approximately 12:50 AM, Burlington Police Department (BPD) and Des Moines County Sheriff’s Office (DMCSO) responded to a shots fired call in the 300 blk of N Gunnison Street. Witnesses described a white S-10 Chevrolet pickup truck, with a topper as possibly being involved in the aforementioned shooting.  At approximately 12:57 AM, BPD officers located the vehicle near Central and Division Streets and initiated a vehicle stop near Angular and Summer Streets.  Initial reports indicate the driver exited the vehicle and displayed a firearm towards the officers and the subsequently fled on foot.  Law enforcement gave chase and multiple rounds were fired by the suspect and law enforcement.  The suspect, whose name will be released once family has been notified, was mortally wounded and pronounced dead at the Great River Medical Center. The Officers and Deputy were not injured in the incident.

Mills County Felony Traffic Stop Press Conference Scheduled for 4:00 p.m. Today (09/04/2019)

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Iowa State Patrol, the Mills County Sheriff’s Department, the Pottawatamie Sheriff’s Department, the Bellevue Police Department, the Omaha Police Department, and the Sarpy County Sheriff’s Department will hold a joint press conference on Wednesday, September 4, 2019, at 4:00 p.m. at the Mills County Sheriff’s Department located at 600 Industrial Road in Glenwood, Iowa. The press conference will address a situation that occurred earlier today involving a felony traffic stop at the Bellevue Toll Bridge.

Authorities Search for Missing Remsen Female - Update

REMSEN, Iowa -- At or about 12:30 PM on September 3, 2019, NICOLE TROMETER contacted Iowa Law Enforcement Officials and advised she was in Vermont.  Law Enforcement requested she go to the nearest Law Enforcement Agency and positively identify herself.  As of 1:20 PM, The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office in Vermont confirmed that they spoke with NICOLE TROMETER and positively identified her by her Iowa Driver’s License.  Franklin County authorities advised NICOLE was in good health, NICOLE told Vermont authorities she traveled with DANIEL KITTREDGE willingly to Vermont. At this time the missing person’s investigation will be closed.

Authorities Search for Missing Remsen Female

REMSEN, Iowa -- On Monday September 1, 2019, The Remsen Police Department took a report of a missing female identified as 27 year-old NICOLE ANN TROMETER of Remsen, Iowa.  The Remsen Police Department, Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office, and the Le Mars Police Department searched the area and were unable to locate TROMETER.  TROMETER has two vehicles that have not been located.

Iowa State Patrol Announces New Public Information Officer

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Iowa State Patrol is proud to announce the promotion of Trooper Alex Dinkla to the rank of Sergeant, Public Information Officer.  This promotion was announced earlier today and will take effect immediately.  Former Public Information Officer, Sergeant Nathan Ludwig was recently promoted to the rank of Lieutenant, and will now serve as District Commander of the Post 1 Office located at 260 N.W. 48th Place in Des Moines.

Iowa Daycare Worker Arrested for Child Endangerment Causing a Death

DONNELLSON, Iowa -- On December 3, 2018, at approximately 8:48 AM, the Lee County Emergency Medical Service Paramedics were dispatched and responded to an unresponsive child at the Raisin Em Up Daycare, located at 607 Park Street, Donnellson, IA.  The child was transported to the Fort Madison Community Hospital and later transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics where the child was provided advanced medical treatment.

COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa -- During the month of November 2018, a minor student from the Columbus Community School District (CCSD) reported he had been sexually exploited by a High School Spanish Teacher, Eusebio Jimenez, Jr (33 years old).

Arrests Made in South Skunk River Investigation

DES MOINES, Iowa -- On August 20, 2019, authorities arrested 27-year-old Cody Vancenbrock, as well as husband and wife, 28-year-old Nicholas Kelly and 34-year-old Holly Kelly. The arrests come as the result of an investigation into the death of 24-year-old Ashley Shafer, who was found dead in the South Skunk River in Mahaska County on August 6.

Celebration, Not Incarceration

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The numbers are shocking:  In 2017 (the most recent year data is available), one person died every 48 minutes in a drunk-driving crash in the United States.  These deaths account for approximately one-third of all traffic deaths each year, or, 10,874 in 2017.  Despite laws in every state the numbers remain similar year after year.  Ultimately, drinking and driving is a choice, and it is a choice that puts all road users at risk.

Authorities Release Name in South Skunk River Investigation

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Following an autopsy by the Office of the State Medical Examiner, the Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) has identified the adult female found in the South Skunk River as 24 year-old Ashley Shafer of Oskaloosa. Ms. Shafer was reported missing to the Oskaloosa Police Department on August 5. The DCI, the Oskaloosa Police Department, and the Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office continue their investigation into the circumstances that lead to Ms. Shafer’s death. While an autopsy was completed, a determination on Ms. Shafer’s cause of death and manner of death are pending further investigation. At this time, there is no known threat to the public.

Body of Adult Female Discovered in South Skunk River, Authorities Seek Information in Missing Person Investigation

DES MOINES, Iowa -- On August 6, 2019, shortly after 3:00 p.m., members of the Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office discovered the body of an adult female in the South Skunk River near the Glendale Access. The circumstances that lead to the female entering the river and the cause of her death are under investigation by the Oskaloosa Police Department, the Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office and the Division of Criminal Investigation. The identity of the female is not known at this time. An autopsy, which is schedule to be performed by the Office of the State Medical Examiner, will help to identify the female found in the river.

Names of Officers Released Involved in Iowa City Officer-Involved Shooting

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- On August 1, 2019, the Iowa Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) conducted interviews of both Iowa City Police Officers involved in the July 29, 2019 shooting incident of Cierra Lewis (25).   Officer Michael Clark and Officer Trai Bunch were interviewed by Special Agents of the DCI’s Major Crime Unit.  Both officers provided voluntary statements and have cooperated with the investigation.

State Farm Awards Iowa State Patrol $40,000 to Advance Auto Safety Efforts

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Iowa State Patrol has received a $40,000 grant from State Farm for two Seatbelt Convincers which will be used statewide. The seatbelt convincers simulate roughly a 5 mph to 8 mph crash for the riders.   State Farm and Iowa State Patrol have worked to advance auto safety messaging across Iowa since 2009 with State Farm donating more than $150,000 in that time.

Multiple Deceased Invidiuals Investigation in Bancroft - Update

DES MOINES, Iowa -- On July 12th, 2019 at about 8:13 am, the Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting two deceased individuals at 524 S. Morehouse Street in Bancroft, Iowa.  Officers with the Bancroft Police Department were dispatched to the residence and located a third deceased individual that was initially not visible to the reporting party.

Sigourney Man Charged in Death of Oskaloosa 4-Month Old

DES MOINES, Iowa -- On June 19, 2019, 21-year old Johnny Dale Jr, of rural Sigourney, was arrested and charged with Child Endangerment Resulting in Serious Injury (Class C Felony). Mr. Dale was taken to the Mahaska County Jail, where he was held on a $250,000 bond.

Oskaloosa Man Charged with Sex Crime Violations

DES MOINES, Iowa -- On June 12, 2019, following an investigation by the Albia Police Department and Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI), 30-year Oskaloosa resident Andrew James Richardson was arrested and charged with two counts of Sexual Abuse in the Third Degree (Class C Felony), three counts of Enticement of a Minor (Class D felony), and four counts of Sexual Exploitation of a Minor (Class C Felony). Mr. Richardson is currently being held in the Monroe County Jail on a cash-only bond of $75,000.

DES MOINES, Iowa -- It is with deep sadness that the Iowa Department of Public Safety confirms the death of one of our employees.

Maquoketa In-Custody Death Investigation

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Just after 7:00 a.m., Saturday, June 15, 2019, Law Enforcement Officers from the Jackson County (Iowa) Sheriff’s Office and the Maquoketa Police Department responded to the 100-block of West Apple Street in Maquoketa, Iowa for a call of a physical altercation in progress. The incident lead to the arrest of Drew Edwards of Maquoketa for assault-related charges. Soon after the arrest of Edwards, Edwards began showing signs of a medical episode and emergency medical personnel were called to assist. Shortly after being transported to the Jackson County Medical Center, Edwards was pronounced dead.

Authorities Investigate Goldfield Shooting

DES MOINES, Iowa -- On June 4th, 2019 at about 5:00 pm, the Eagle Grove Police Department responded to 722 N. Pine Street in Goldfield, Iowa on the report of a shooting.  Upon arrival, officers located only a witness to the shooting.  Officers later located the victim, Rich Crawford, 38, walking on a gravel road in rural Goldfield, Iowa.  Crawford was taken to Iowa Specialty Hospital in Clarion, Iowa where he was treated and released.   The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation was asked to assist and determined Crawford was in an altercation with another male, who has been identified.  This incident remains under investigation.

One Arrested Following Winterset Death Investigation

DES MOINES, Iowa -- On May 27, 2019, at 11:09 p.m., Madison County 911 received a call of an unresponsive female at 121 E. Lane Street, Lot #1, in Winterset. Responding Winterset police officers found 23-year old Rosanna Otto deceased inside the home from an apparent gunshot wound. The Winterset Police Department and the Division of Criminal Investigation identified 25-year old Jerome “Jerry” Moyer, of Norwalk, as a suspect in the death of Ms. Otto. Mr. Moyer was arrested without incident by the Dubuque County Sheriff’s Office following a traffic stop. Mr. Moyer is in the Dubuque County Jail on the charge of Murder in the First Degree. Mr. Moyer will be transported to the Madison County Jail at a later date.

DES MOINES, Iowa -- On May 23, 2019, the Iowa State Patrol and Division of Criminal Investigation charged 54-year old Gerry Greenland with one count of Attempted Murder. The charge follows an investigation into the action of Mr. Greenland towards Decatur County Sheriff Ben Boswell.

CLICK IT OR TICKET CAMPAIGN - May 20 – June 2, 2019

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Memorial Day and the traditional beginning of summer are quickly approaching.  Unfortunately, with the increase in summer traffic we will also see a rise in traffic crashes and fatalities.  Last year there were four traffic fatalities on Iowa roadways over the Memorial Day weekend; four deaths that may have been prevented.  According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in 2017 there were 10,076 unbuckled passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes nationwide.  A majority of those lives could have been saved if they had been wearing seat belts.  The national Click It or Ticket campaign will take place May 20 – June 2, 2019.  State and local law agencies across the state will be stepping up seat belt enforcement with the goal of protecting you and your family.

Arrest Made in Fayette County Infant's Death

DES MOINES, Iowa -- On April 30th, 2018, at approximately 6:18 a.m., the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) was contacted by the Iowa Department of Human Services (DHS) regarding a four week old male child that was found to have brain injuries.  Iowa DHS investigators reported that the child, which had been living at 23837 90th Street, a rural address outside of Westgate, Iowa, had been taken to Community Memorial Hospital in Sumner the night before, after it was reported by Holten’s guardians that he was “seizing”.  The child was then subsequently transferred to the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics (UIHC) in Iowa City.  The FCSO subsequently contacted the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) for assistance and an investigation was initiated.  On May 27th, 2018, the victim, identified as Holten Smith, died as a result of his injuries.

Names Released in Iowa City Officer-Involved Shooting

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation has interviewed the two Iowa City Police Officers involved in the incident that resulted in shots being fired by both officers. Officer Travis Neeld, an Iowa City Officer for 10 years, and Officer Alex Stricker, an officer for 9 years, responded to two burglar alarms at the Pizza Hut and Second Act businesses on the south side of the city. While investigating, officers located Michael Arturo Cintron Caceres, 34, in the area of the businesses. A foot chase ensued and Caceres was located in a fenced area at Big Ten Rentals, 1820 Boyrum Street, where the shooting occurred.

Former DHS Employee Charged with Three Counts of Perjury

DES MOINES, Iowa -- On April 8th, 2019, Chelsie Gray, a former Social Work II Case Manager with the Iowa Department of Human Services (DHS) was arrested and charged in Cerro Gordo County with three counts of Perjury under Iowa Code 720.2.  Gray’s arrest is related to testimony she provided in Cerro Gordo County in December of 2017.  The investigation was completed by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and Hancock County Attorney’s Office is acting as special prosecutor in this matter at the request of the Cerro Gordo County Attorney’s Office.

Green Beer and Driving Don't Mix

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Americans have celebrated their Irish heritage on St. Patrick’s Day for decades.  Sadly, too much green beer can lead to dangerous driving after the celebrating.  Over the last few years there has been a dramatic spike in alcohol and drug impaired driving.  Over the 2017 (the last year in which statistics are available) St. Patrick’s Day holiday there were 59 fatalities nationwide with 37 percent involving drunk drivers. The most dangerous time to be on the road was the early hours of March 18, when 75% of all crash fatalities involved drunk drivers.

Iowa State Patrol to Partner with Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division for Tobacco, Alternative Nicotine and Vapor Product Education and Enforcement

SPENCER, Iowa -- The Iowa State Patrol has taken a pledge to keep tobacco, alternative nicotine and vapor products out of the hands of youth. Known as I-PLEDGE, the program is a partnership with the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division (ABD) to educate local retailers and to enforce Iowa’s tobacco, alternative nicotine and vapor product laws. Since the program’s inception in 2000, the statewide tobacco compliance rate has grown to 91%. By participating in the program, the Iowa State Patrol has committed to do its part to increase the compliance rate even more this year.

Iowa DCI Conducts Burglary Investigation Involving Fairfield Police Officer

FAIRFIELD, Iowa -- During the month of November 2018, the Veterinary Clinic, Fairfield, IA, began to suspect shortages of a Schedule IV narcotic from their inventory.  The Clinic staff began to conduct an internal investigation which culminated in a staff member observing a Fairfield Police Department Officer (later identified as Ryan Mills, 31 years old) enter and leave the clinic prior to business hours.  This information was reported to the FPD Police Chief Dave Thomas who immediately contacted the Iowa Department of Public Safety’s Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation Major Crime Unit to conduct the investigation due to the conflict of interest.

Arrest Made in Investigation of Body Found in Floyd County in December of 2017

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Grundy County Sheriff’s Office, the Floyd County Sheriff’ Office and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation have made an arrest in the homicide of 28 year old Michael Bruce Johns, whose body was found in rural Floyd County in December of 2017.  Grundy County Sheriff’s Deputies and Agents with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation arrested Armando Adame III of Waterloo, Iowa on January 29th, 2019.  Adame was taken into custody at the Fort Dodge Correctional Facility in Fort Dodge, Iowa, where he was serving a sentence on prior unrelated convictions.  Adame has been charged with Murder in the First Degree and Possession of a Firearm/Offensive Weapon as a Felon.

Missing Teenager Found Unharmed

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Law enforcement is cancelling the previously issued Attempt to Locate for missing Melcher teenager Liberty “Libby” Boley. Through cooperation between law enforcement authorities in Iowa and Texas, Libby was found unharmed this morning in south Texas. Iowa law enforcement, including the Division of Criminal Investigation, Melcher-Dallas Police Department, Marion County Sheriff’s Office, and the Marion County Attorney’s Office, continue the investigation into the circumstances surrounding Libby’s disappearance. Law enforcement would like to thank the public for their vigilance and commitment to helping locate Libby.

Wisconsin Man Arrested on Burglary Charges

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Beginning in September 2018, law enforcement agencies began responding to numerous burglaries of rural businesses all across the state of Iowa and Minnesota.  The burglar forced their way into business late at night when the businesses were closed.  The burglar would steal primarily cash from these businesses.  Law enforcement agencies across the state have been worked together sharing details of the burglaries and video surveillance to try and identify, locate and arrest the burglary suspect.

Public's Assistance Requested in Missing Teenager Investigation

DES MOINES, Iowa -- On Monday, January 14, 2018, 14-year old Liberty Boley was reported missing to the Melcher-Dallas Police Department.  Liberty, a freshman at Melcher-Dallas High School, has not been seen since. Liberty is a 5 foot 7 inch, white female, with light brown hair, blue eyes, and wears glasses. Liberty was last seen at Melcher-Dallas High School at approximately 2:30 p.m, wearing black and white tee shirt, purple sweatshirt, black leggings, and brown Ugg boots. Liberty has medical conditions that require regimented medication and she may be without those medications.

Iowa State Patrol Makes Arrest in Double Fatality Crash

DES MOINES, Iowa -- On December 29, 2018, Travis Gonzales, 37, of Bondurant, was westbound on I-80 near the 138 mile marker driving at a high rate of speed when the vehicle he was operating rear ended a vehicle containing two occupants. After impact, both vehicles lost control and entered the north ditch of I-80.  The subject's speed was found to be 126 mph in a 65 mph zone. The subject showed several signs of impairment and made several incriminating statements causing troopers to serve a search warrant on the subject for blood. The blood was analyzed at the DCI Crime Lab and a BAC of .219 was returned.

Iowa State Patrol Charges Driver in Wrong-Way Crash

DES MOINES, Iowa -- On November 10, 2018, a two vehicle crash occurred in the westbound lanes of Interstate 80 near the east mix master. A vehicle driven by Zlatan Vukasinovic, 39, of Des Moines, was travelling eastbound in the westbound lanes of Interstate 80 and struck a westbound vehicle head-on, driven by Franklin Sylalom, 31, of Des Moines. The head-on crash resulted in the death of Sylalom.

Webster County Officer-Involved Shooting - UPDATE

DES MOINES, Iowa --The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation determined several law enforcement agencies were involved in the pursuit and has identified the deceased as Matthew Hurley, age 45, of Wall Lake, Iowa.  The officers involved in the shooting were identified as Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Aaron Smidt and Calhoun County Deputy Chase Goodman.

Webster County Officer-Involved Shooting

DES MOINES, Iowa -- On January 1st, 2019, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation was asked to assist the Webster County Sheriff’s Office and Iowa State Patrol with an officer-involved shooting (see previous press release by Webster County Sheriff’s Office below).  The incident started just outside Fort Dodge and ended near the intersection of Highway 175 and Oak Avenue in rural Webster County.
