Iowa DCI Investigate Inmate Death in Grudy County

GRUNDY COUNTY, Iowa -- On Thursday, January 28, 2016, shortly after 9 p.m., officials with the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office located an inmate that was unresponsive in a cell at the Grundy County Jail.  Emergency procedures were initiated and the inmate was transported to the Grundy County Memorial Hospital, where the inmate was pronounced dead.

KEOKUK, Iowa – The Iowa Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation’s (DCI) Major Crime Unit, Special Enforcement Operations Bureau (SEOB), Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force (ICAC), Crime Lab Crime Scene Team, State Fire Marshal Division (SFM), Division of Intelligence and Fusion Center (DOI) and Iowa State Patrol (ISP), in partnership with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Lee County Sheriff’s Office executed two search warrants around 12:30PM yesterday, January 28, 2016, at the Midwest Academy campus (2416 340th Street, Keokuk) and Midwest Treatment Center (2818 Hwy. 218, Montrose).

State Fire Marshal Warns Heating Equipment is a Leading Cause of Home Fire Deaths

Des Moines, IOWA – The Iowa Department of Public Safety reminds Iowans heating equipment is a leading cause of home fire deaths during the winter months. Almost half of home heating equipment fires are reported during the months of December, January, and February. Some simple steps can prevent most heating-related fires from happening.

Name Released in Cerro Gordo County Inmate Death

Mason City, IOWA -- The Cerro Gordo County jail inmate who was found unresponsive in the male dorm on January 2, 2016, has been identified as Edward Michael Hochstatter, 54, of Bloomington, Minnesota.  Hochstatter had been arrested on the evening of December 31, 2015, by Clear Lake Police for operating while intoxicated.  Hochstatter was one of five occupants in the male dorm, which is a large, well-lit, video monitored and recorded room with bunk beds, a table and a television.

DCI Assisting with Death Investigation - Update

Nashua, IOWA -- Update: The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation has identified the deceased in this case as 56 year old Karl Phillip White of 110 St. Lawrence Street in Nashua, Iowa.  An autopsy has been completed by the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office in Ankeny, Iowa and the cause of death was determined to be a gunshot wound.  The preliminary investigation has indicated a possible accidental discharge of a weapon, by another person, however the case remains under investigation.   No criminal charges have been filed at this time.

Iowa DCI Investigating Inmate Death

Cerro Gordo County, IOWA -- On January 2, 2016, at approximately 3:30 PM,  Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office correctional officers discovered an unresponsive male in a male dormitory.  Lifesaving efforts were immediately started by jail staff.  The Mason City Ambulance and Fire Department was also called to provide medical assistance.  The man was unable to be revived.

DCI Assisting with Death Investigation

Nashua, IOWA -- On January 2, 2016, at approximately 4:30 PM, the Nashua Police Department and the Iowa State Patrol responded to a 911 call at 110 St. Lawrence Street in Nashua, Iowa on the report of a shooting.  Officers located a deceased victim, a 56 year old male, with a gunshot wound.
