Autopsy Results for Cambridge Death Investigation

Cambridge, IOWA -- On April 14, 2014, at approximately 5:17 p.m., the Huxley Police Department responded to 117 Race Street in Cambridge, Iowa, in response to a welfare check. Upon checking the residence, officers located a deceased female in an upstairs bedroom. The female had multiple gunshot wounds.

Maquoketa Police Officer's Actions Justified

Maquoketa, IOWA -- On April 1, 2014, shortly before 3:00 a.m., Sgt. Brendan Zeimet was ending his shift by filling his squad car up with gas at the city lot.  He observed a 2005 Dodge Ram pickup truck parked on the wrong side of the road in the 200 block of West Grove Street, with its lights off and one occupant.  Sgt. Zeimet called in the location and the plate number prior to stopping in front of the truck to conduct a welfare check on the driver who has been identified as Aaron Edward Scott.

At 10:30 A.M. on April 14, 2014 the Jackson County Attorney will hold a press conference to release the findings of the investigation regarding the Maquoketa officer involved shooting incident of April 1, 2014.  The conference will be held in the District Courtroom in the Jackson County Courthouse.

Casey’s General Stores Recognizes Off-Duty DCI Agent’s Heroism

Des Moines, IOWA – On Friday, April 4, 2014, Casey’s General Store President and CEO Mr. Robert Myers recognized Division of Criminal Investigation Special Agent Shelby McCreedy for her selfless actions of stopping an attempted robbery at an Atlantic Casey’s convenience store, while off-duty.  Myers presented Special Agent McCreedy with a framed letter of gratitude from Casey’s for what he says was “going above and beyond the call of duty.”

Maquoketa Police Officer Involved Shooting Update

Maquoketa, IOWA -- On April 1, 2014, at approximately 2:51 A.M., A Maquoketa Police Officer stopped to check on a vehicle in the 200 block of West Grove Street in Maquoketa.  The vehicle, a 2005 Dodge Ram pickup, was driven by Aaron Edward Scott.  Scott exited the vehicle with a rifle and Scott and the officer exchanged gunfire.  The officer was shot once in the left forearm and Scott fled the area in his pickup.  The pickup was found a short time just north of Highway 136 on 150th Avenue in Clinton County.  The pickup had been involved in a rollover accident and Scott was deceased inside the pickup.

Des Moines, IOWA – In 2012, 72% of fatal crashes in Iowa occurred on secondary rural roads.  Approximately 79% of Iowa’s total roadways are considered secondary in nature.  Due to these alarming statistics, rural safety has become a major concern.

Officer Involved Shooting Investigation in Maquoketa, Iowa

Maquoketa, IOWA -- At approximately 2:51 AM on April 1, 2014, A Maquoketa Police Officer stopped to check on a blue, 2005 Dodge Ram pickup truck that was sitting in the 200 block of West Grove Street.  The officer approached the vehicle, saw the driver with a weapon, they exchanged gunfire and the Maquoketa officer was shot. The injuries he sustained are not life threatening.  Several rounds also struck the Maquoketa Police car.

Maquoketa Police Officer Traffic Stop Shooting Incident

Maquoketa, IOWA -- At approximately 2:51 AM, while conducting a traffic stop, a Maquoketa Police Officer was involved in an shooting incident on the 200 block of West Grove Street. The suspect fled the scene. The Officer received non-life threatening injuries and was taken to Jackson County Regional Health Center. The investigation continues and further information will be released when it becomes available.

DCI Releases Finding in Black Hawk County Inmate Death

Black Hawk County, IOWA -- On March 7, 2014, an inmate, identified as James Terrell Taylor, age 34, of Waterloo, was being held in the intake area of the Black Hawk County Jail.  At approximately 6:25 p.m., Mr. Taylor was found to be unresponsive. The deputy who found Mr. Taylor began providing emergency aid.  An ambulance was called and Mr. Taylor was taken to Allen Hospital in Waterloo where he was pronounced dead.

Orange Park, FLORIDA – On March 25th, 2014, officers with the Sac City, Iowa, Police Department and agents with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation interviewed and arrested John David Green, age 54, of Florida, for the June 2009 murder of Sac City resident Mark Koster.

Henry County Dispatcher Charged with Theft

Des Moines, IOWA -- In the fall of 2013, Henry County Sheriff Rich McNarnee discovered  financial discrepancies in his office. Sheriff McNarnee brought this to the attention of the Iowa State Auditor's Office and they confirmed it during their annual audit. The  Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation was requested for assistance in January 2014.

Autopsy Performed on Deceased Male

Tipton, IOWA – On 03/17/14 at 9:00 AM, the autopsy of a 15 year- old male, Keifla Thomas Robinson, was performed at the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office by Doctor Johnathan Thompson. No trauma to the body was noted during post mortem examination. Cause and manner of death are pending test results. Additional information will be released when those results are available.

DCI Investigates Council Bluffs Officer-Involved Shooting

Council Bluffs, IOWA – At approximately 5:53 PM, on March 14th, the Pottawattamie County 911 center received a call of a reckless driver in the area of North 8th Street and Avenue D in Council Bluffs.  A Council Bluffs Patrol Officer in the area observed the subject vehicle occupied by one male subject.  The subject attempted to flee the area and the patrol officer located the subject a short time later in the area of North 17th Street and Avenue A in Council Bluffs, where a foot pursuit ensued.  During the encounter with the subject, the patrol officer discharged his duty weapon one time, missing the subject.  The subject was apprehended and transported to a local hospital with a medical condition that was not related to the discharge of the officer’s weapon.

Des Moines, IOWA --- St. Patrick’s Day is an all-day celebration for many and, for some, it includes alcohol.  The Iowa Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau reminds you to celebrate responsibly.  Designate a sober driver before your party begins.  In recent years, two of every five traffic deaths that occurred on this holiday involved a drunk driver.  In Iowa, eight people lost their lives last March in an alcohol-related traffic crash with a double fatality during the St. Patrick’s Day weekend.

Crawford County Fire Deaths Investigation

Denison, IOWA --- On Monday, March 10, 2014, at approximately 12:45 p.m., the Crawford County Communication Center received a 911 phone call which alerted emergency personnel to a fire at 1872 Milford Road, Deloit, IA. The Deloit Volunteer Fire Department, Denison Fire Department, and Vail Fire Department and Crawford County Sheriff s Office responded to this address to investigate the 911 call where they then discovered the main dwelling on the property, and a pickup truck, were found to be engulfed in flames.

The Department of Public Safety reminds all Iowans to change the batteries in their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors this weekend when they set their clocks ahead one hour at 2:00 a.m. on Sunday morning, March 9th. The State Fire Marshal Division recommends that you change your smoke alarm batteries on March 9th and every year at Daylight Saving Time. Taking this simple step can save the lives of you and your family.

Estherville Police Respond to Homicide

Estherville, IA – On February 27, 2014, at 7:58 P.M. the Estherville Police Department responded to a 911 Call to 2302 3rd Avenue South Lot 108 in regards to a person being shot.  Upon arrival, officers located a female victim, identified as 30 year old Michaela Lynne Jordan of Estherville, with a single gunshot wound.  Officers determined that Michaela Jordan was deceased upon their arrival.  Responding officers were able to obtain witness statements that assisted in the case.

Suspect Arrested for First Degree Murder for the Death of Severn Jefferson

Des Moines, IOWA -- On February 24, 2014, at approximately 4:52PM, the Tama County Communications Center received a 911 call reference a stabbing at 1695 340th Street Tama, Iowa which is located on the Meskwaki Nation Settlement.   The Meskwaki Police Department, the Tama County Sheriff’s Office, and the Toledo Police Department responded to the emergency call.  Upon arrival, law enforcement found Severn Daniel Jefferson (DOB:  10/10/1996) unresponsive. It appeared to responding officers that Jefferson had been stabbed in the chest with a knife.

Man Arrested in Connection With Stolen Vehicle Incident At Burlington Casino

On February 13, 2014, at approximately 6:09 a.m., the Burlington Police Department received information from an individual that heard news reports regarding the incident at the casino.  The Burlington resident advised police that David W. Cross, age 40, was asleep in the back seat of a vehicle located in the 100 block of Shields Street in Burlington.  In addition, the Burlington resident advised that he believed Cross was the subject involved in the incident at the casino the night before. Burlington Police Officers responded and took David Cross into custody.

Incident at Catfish Bend Casino Under Investigation

Burlington, IOWA -- On February 12, 2014, at approximately 9:10 p.m., the Division of Criminal Investigation’s Special Enforcement Operations Bureau at the Catfish Bend Casino received a report of a subject breaking into vehicles in the casino’s parking garage. The subject, described as a black male, wearing a heavy overcoat and stocking hat had stolen a casino employee’s vehicle.

Investigation Leads to Arrest in 18 Month-Old's Death in Oskaloosa, Iowa

Oskaloosa, IOWA – The Oskaloosa Police Department and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation announce an arrest in the death investigation regarding an 18 month-old girl in Oskaloosa, Iowa.  On February 4, 2014, investigators with the Oskaloosa PD and the Iowa DCI arrested Alicia Marie Ritenour, age 20.  Ritenour is the mother of Ava Ritenour, 18 months old.

Villisca Man Arrested on Multiple Charges

Montgomery County, IOWA -- On January 23rd, 2014, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department arrested Carlton John Dolph, age 31, of Villisca on a Montgomery County warrant for one count of Terroristic Threats, a class D felony, and two counts of Arson in the Second Degree. Arson in the Second Degree is a Class C felony. Dolph was transported to the Montgomery County Jail and was being held on $10,000 bond.

Arrest for Homicide by Vehicle in Delaware County

Delaware County, IOWA -- On December 21, 2013, at approximately 2:09 a.m., Dean Dempster III was operating a 2006 Ford F250 on County Road D22/210th Street, east of Earlville, Iowa.  Dempster is alleged to of consumed several mixed drinks and beer at several Delaware County bars prior to losing control of the vehicle he was operating and as a result of the collision Brittany Honkomp was killed.  Dean Dempster III was arrested on Friday, January 10, 2014, for Homicide by Vehicle and is being held in the Delaware County Jail under $500,000.00 Bond.

1984 Triple Homicide Solved After 30 Years - Updated

Ottumwa, IOWA --- The Wapello County Sheriff’s office, Davis County Sheriff’s office and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation have resolved the 1984 Triple Homicide of Justin Hook, Jr., age 20, Sara Link, age 41, and Tina Lade, age 19.  Sara Link was the mother of Justin Hook.  Hook and Tina Lade were dating at the time of the homicide.

Ottumwa, IOWA --- The Wapello County Sheriff's Office, Davis County Sheriff's Office, and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation announce resolution to the 1984 triple homicide. A press conference will be held tomorrow afternoon, Friday, January 10, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. at the Wapello County Sheriff's Office, 2nd Floor Training Room, 330 West 2nd Street, Ottumwa, Iowa.

Parkersburg Man Arrested on Assault and Drug Charges After Assault on Cedar Falls Police Officer

Cedar Falls, IOWA – Twenty-seven year old Zachary Lee Church of Parkersburg, Iowa, was arrested today upon his release from Sartori Hospital in Cedar Falls, Iowa, on two warrants for Assault Against a Peace Officer (708.3A(1)) and Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Deliver (124.401(1)(D)).  Both charges are class D felonies.
