Moravia Iowa Man Sentenced for Possession of Child Pornography

DES MOINES, Iowa -- On June 2, 2017, David Ray Nelson, a 31 year-old resident of Moravia, was sentenced by United States District Court Judge Stephanie Rose to 72 months in prison for possession of child pornography.  Nelson will be required to serve 7 years of supervised release following his imprisonment.

Fireworks Sales Season Ends Saturday, July 8 - Safe Storage and Transport Encouraged

DES MOINES, Iowa – The sales period for the retail sales of consumer fireworks will end at midnight on July 8, 2017.  Consumer fireworks can again be sold starting December 10 through January 3, but only from permanent buildings.

Save the Fireworks for the Driveway, Not the Highway July 1-4, 2017

DES MOINES, Iowa -- With changes in Iowa’s fireworks law there will be even more celebrating for the Fourth of July and the preceding weekend.  Unfortunately, that celebrating too often includes misuse of alcohol which may lead to drunk driving.  Because the high fatality rate over recent Fourth of July holidays there will be additional law enforcement on Iowa’s roads as well as the entire nation.

As Iowa Fireworks Licensing Hits 500, State Fire Marshal Urges "Safety First"

DES MOINES, Iowa -- More than 500 retail licenses have been issued for the sale of consumer fireworks in Iowa.

“Thanks to the dedication of our employees, we have been able to establish a program and issue more than 500 licenses since this law took effect on May 9,” said State Fire Marshal Jeff Quigle.  “Most states have several months to set up their programs.  Our local fire service partners have been an integral part of this program, and the fireworks sellers have worked with us throughout this process to address both the public safety concerns and the business needs of the industry.”

Number of Licensed Fireworks Sites Expanding

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Licensed fireworks sales in temporary structures can begin today, under the new Iowa law.  Sales from permanent structures have been allowed since June 1.

The State Fire Marshal reports that hundreds of fireworks licenses have been issued, and more applications are being processed.  The current numbers include 274 licenses that have been issued for the sale of consumer fireworks, and 14 wholesalers that have registered

Iowa State Patrol Plans for 2017 Race Season at Iowa Speedway in Newton

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Law enforcement and Iowa Speedway officials are preparing for the 2017 race season at Iowa Speedway in Newton, Iowa, and are asking Iowans and visiting race fans to do the same. Six races over the course of three weekends are scheduled this year. Attendance numbers will vary for each race, but organizers anticipate 10,000 – 30,000 fans will attend each race day.

Officer Involved Shooting - Lee County Sheriff's Department UPDATE

DES MOINES, Iowa -- As previously mentioned in an earlier press release, on Monday, June 12, 2017, at approximately 12:25am, Deputies of the Lee County (Iowa) Sheriff’s Office responded to the 2400 block of 270th Street in rural Montrose, Iowa for a call of a burglary in progress. The incident lead to an officer-involved shooting in which an adult male, Joshua V. Welborn, 29, of Montrose, sustained a single gunshot wound. Welborn remains hospitalized with what are believed as non-life threatening injuries.

DES MOINES, Iowa --The State Fire Marshal reports that 188 licenses to sell consumer fireworks have been issued, including: 127 licenses for permanent sites, including limited quantity licenses and 61 licenses for temporary sites.

Officer Involved Shooting - Lee County Sheriff's Department

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Just after midnight on Monday, June 12, 2017, Deputies of the Lee County (Iowa) Sheriff’s Office responded to the 2400 block of 270th Street in rural Montrose, Iowa, for a call of a burglary in progress. The incident led to an officer-involved shooting in which an adult male subject sustained gunshot wounds. The male subject is currently receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained during the course of the incident.

Iowa Fireworks Licensing Increases

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The State Fire Marshal has now issued 31 retail licenses to sell fireworks, and an additional 253 licenses are in the process.

“The number of licenses issued increased this week, because we have been able to issue licenses for many small retail-sale sites in larger stores throughout the state,” said Fire Marshal Jeff Quigle.  “We have developed a licensing process for these small-scale sites that allows us to provide faster review.  Many Iowans will be able to see these fireworks sites in their communities very soon.”

Progress Made for Fireworks Sales in Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The State Fire Marshal is processing dozens of applications to permit the sale of consumer fireworks, and expects hundreds more in the next 10 days.

In the first five days, 7 retail licenses were issued, and 11 wholesalers were registered.  The State Fire Marshal reports that it has received 168 retail applications.  Of those, 7 licenses were issued, 77 are awaiting site-plan review, 21 have been approved and are awaiting payment, 10 have been required to resubmit their site plans, 3 site plans have been disapproved, and 45 applications have been started but have not yet been submitted.  Based on the filings, the State Fire Marshal expects to see nearly 1,000 sites where fireworks will be sold in Iowa.

Brisk Business for Fireworks Licensing

DES MOINES, Iowa
-- The State Fire Marshal opened its online licensing portal for fireworks, and in the first 24 hours, more than 88 applications have been started and 46 applications have been filed.  The licensing implements a new law that allows the sale of consumer fireworks.  More applications are anticipated, because more than 600 individuals and companies have established accounts that will allow them to apply for licenses.

Guthrie Center Fire Investigation

GUTHRIE CENTER, Iowa -- Law enforcement officials with the Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and the State Fire Marshal’s Office, along with the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner, have identified the cousins that died in the May 15th fire in Guthrie Center.  They have been identified as 16 year old Shakiah Cockerham and 12 year old Melanie “Paige” Exline, both of Guthrie Center.

DES MOINES, Iowa -- From May 22 - June 4, 2017, state and local law enforcement agencies across the nation, as well as Iowa, will be stepping up seat belt enforcement.  Memorial Day weekend kicks off the busy summer season with many more families on the roads.  Iowa’s seat belt usage rate of 94 percent is one of the highest in the nation, but the remaining six percent of vehicle occupants account for approximately half of all traffic fatalities.  SEAT BELTS ARE THE SINGLE MOST EFFECTIVE WAY TO SURVIVE IN A CRASH.

The Mother Road Tour

DES MOINES, Iowa -- A one day commemorative tour celebrating the 82nd birthday of the Iowa Highway Safety Patrol (now the Iowa State Patrol) will be held May 7, 2017.  The Iowa Automotive Heritage Foundation, the Iowa State Patrol, and Keep Iowa Beautiful are the key organizers of the event.  The tour will be led by the recently-restored 1935 Ford Tudor Sedan State Patrol car along with two other vintage patrol vehicles.

Milford Shooting on Sunday, April 30, 2017 - UPDATE

MILFORD, Iowa -- Milford Police Officer Jesse Hoss has been identified as the Officer who fired his weapon after he and another Police Officer from the Arnold’s Park Police Department responded to a call about a domestic situation at 26 Westview Dr. in Milford.  The shooting occurred around 9:00PM Sunday April 30, 2017.  Officers Hoss and the Arnolds Park Police Officer approached the residence of 26 Westview Dr., when a male subject inside the residence who has since been identified as Robert Brunner (age 52) pointed a handgun at the two officers.  Shots were exchanged between Brunner and Officer Hoss. Both officers retreated to safety and requested more backup. Law Enforcement attempted to make contact with Mr. Brunner for several hours in effort to resolve the situation in a peaceful manner.  No contact was ever made with Mr. Brunner.  Law Enforcement made entry to the residence around midnight Sunday and located Mr. Brunner deceased.

Four Fallen Officers to be Added to Iowa Peace Officer Memorial

DES MOINES, Iowa -- This Friday, Governor Terry E. Branstad, Lt. Governor Kim K. Reynolds, and the State of Iowa will honor four officers killed in the line of duty.  Each of these men died while serving to protect and keep Iowa communities safe.

Officer Involved Shooting in Milford

MILFORD, Iowa -- At approximately 9:00PM on Sunday April 30th, the Milford Police Department responded to a report of a domestic situation at 26 Westview Dr. in Milford.  As officers approached the residence, a male subject fired several rounds at responding officers.  A Milford Officer returned fire and retreated to safety.  The male subject then barricaded himself inside.   Several officers from surrounding law enforcement agencies responded as part of the HEAT Team.  Officers evacuated several residences surrounding 26 Westview Dr.

Male Arrested for Sexual Assault of Minor

CHEROKEE, Iowa -- In July 2016, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office was made aware of a sexual assault involving a minor female.  The incident occurred at the residence of EDDIE D. DELONG in Cleghorn, Iowa. The Cherokee County Sheriff’s office in conjunction with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation conducted the investigation.  On April 5, 2017 EDDIE D. DELONG (43) was arrested and charged with Sex Abuse in the 3rd Degree (C Felony) and Supplying Alcohol to a Minor – Causing Serious Injury (Aggravated Misdemeanor).  DELONG’s bond was set at $10,000.00.  On April 7, 2017, DELONG posted bond, a preliminary hearing has been scheduled for April 17, 2017 at the Cherokee County Courthouse at 3:00 PM.

Male Arrested on Multiple Charges Across Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa - On November 16, 2016, Jeff Lee Altmayer, 57, of Ankeny, IA, was arrested and charged with three (3) counts of Enticing a Minor, a Class C Felony; one (1) count of Impersonating a Public Official, an Aggravated Misdemeanor; one (1) count of Possession of a Controlled Substance, a Serious Misdemeanor and one (1) count of Possession of Prescription Drug or Device without a Prescription. These charges stemmed from a November 16th incident in Monona County, IA, in which he attempted to lure a child into his vehicle.

FirstNet Board Approves Resolution to Finalize Contract Award

DES MOINES, Iowa (03/28/2017) - Today during a special board meeting, the FirstNet Board unanimously approved Board Resolution 84 to finalize the contract award to build the National Public Safety Broadband Network (NPSBN) across the United States.  For over four years, the State of Iowa has been involved in the FirstNet process by conducting outreach to all 99 counties, educating public safety on the FirstNet initiative, collecting data on Iowa’s public safety sector, and holding FirstNet Public Private Partnership Summits to provide the opportunity for public and private industry representatives to discuss the status of the FirstNet process and what it means for Iowa.

Name Released in Cerro Gordo County Inmate Death

CERRO GORDO COUNTY, Iowa -- The Cerro Gordo County inmate found unresponsive in the detox cell on March 23, 2017, has been identified as Taras Devlin Roan, 54, of Mason City, Iowa.  Roan had been arrested on the evening of March 22, 2017, by the Mason City Police Department for assault and public urination.  Roan was the lone occupant in the detox cell, which is video monitored.

Child Endangerment Causing Death Arrest

KEOSUAQUA, Iowa - On Thursday, July 7, 2016, at approximately 3:28 a.m., Angel Poole (23) of 155 West Cedar Street, Apt. #4, in Birmingham, Iowa called 911 stating her 67-day-old son, Judah Wessels was having difficulty breathing.  Judah Wessels was transported to the Van Buren County Hospital (Keosauqua, Iowa) via ambulance and pronounced dead at approximately 4:40 AM.  Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office (VBSO) launched an investigation and requested the assistance of the Iowa Department of Public Safety-Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI).

Iowa DCI Investigating Inmate's Death

CERRO GORDO COUNTY, Iowa -- On March 23, 2017, at approximately 4:25 AM, a Cerro Gordo County inmate was found unresponsive in his detox cell. Jail staff started life saving measures, Mason City Fire Department Medics responded to the scene and transported the man to Mercy Medical Center North Iowa where he was pronounced dead.

Clinton Double Death Investigation

DES MOINES, Iowa –  On March 6th, 2017 at 3:08 p.m., the Clinton Police Department responded to a report of an unresponsive person at 114 N. 5th Street.  Upon investigation, officers discovered two adult males, both deceased, inside the residence.  The deceased were transported to the Office of the Iowa State Medical Examiner, where autopsies were conducted.  The Office of the Iowa State Medical Examiner has confirmed the identification of both individuals.

WINNEBAGO COUNTY, Iowa -- On Friday February 17, 2017, Randall Alan Finer, age 53, of Lake Mills, Iowa was arrested for on-going criminal conduct a class “B” felony, in violation of Iowa Code §706A.1 (5) & 706A.2 (4).  The arrest stems from a two year investigation by the Iowa Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI).

CAMANCHE, Iowa -- The individual identified for shooting Nicholas Luskey has been identified as Derick Carroll, 25, of Clinton, Iowa.  Carroll has cooperated with investigators and the investigation is ongoing.  No arrest has been made in this investigation.

Camanche Death Investigation

CAMANCHE, Iowa -- On February 1, 2017, Camanche Police Department was dispatched to 616 5th Avenue reference shots being fired in the vicinity.  Upon arrival, law enforcement found Nicholas Luskey (22) lying near a vehicle with an apparent gunshot wound to the mid torso.  Luskey was transported to Mercy Medical Center and subsequently to the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City where he was pronounced dead at approximately 2:44 PM. The Iowa Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) was called in to assist with the investigation.

Iowa DCI Investigating Death in Emmet County

EMMET COUNTY, Iowa – On January 25, 2017, a Dickinson County Sheriff’s deputy observed a subject, later identified as Alexander Lee Graves, 19, of Kansas City, MO, driving a vehicle that had been previously reported as stolen out of Sac County, IA.  The deputy attempted to initiate a stop, but Graves fled in the vehicle.

Iowa DCI Investigating Narcotics Related Shooting in Waterloo

WATERLOO, Iowa -- On January 22, 2017, at about 7:20 am, law enforcement officers with the Tri-County Drug Task Force in Waterloo conducted a narcotics transaction at the Awesome Car Wash at 2180 Logan Avenue in Waterloo, Iowa.  During the transaction, two suspects from Minnesota arrived at the location to deliver narcotics to undercover officers.
