Marshal Bell was shot and killed Friday, June 11, 1976, with his own weapon after stopping the vehicle of a suspected burglary suspect just outside of Keota. The suspect was able to gain control of Marshal Bell's service weapon and shot him several times in the chest. The suspect, a 19 year-old youth, was apprehended three days later.
The suspect signed a statement which said he killed Marshal Bell but later repudiated the confession saying he signed it under pressure. He was tried and acquitted November 29, 1977.
Marshal Bell served with the Bellevue Police Department for 2 weeks and was 22 years old.
