Officer Marion Albert "Bert" Conrey

On March 17, 1938,  Marion “Bert” Conrey  was serving as a police officer with the Knoxville Police Department.  While on routine patrol that night, Officer Conrey encountered an intoxicated couple.  Officer Conrey advised the couple to go home and moments later, they attacked him, knocking him to the ground, kicking him in the head.  Officer Conrey was hospitalized in critical condition and on April 2, he died as a result of the severe head injuries he suffered.  The attackers were subsequently charged with and convicted of second degree murder.  The verdict was later overturned by the Iowa Supreme Court and the attackers entered a plea of manslaughter in lieu of a new trial.

At the time of his death, Officer Conrey had served for a total of 23 years as a law enforcement officer.
