Deputy Gates was shot and killed Wednesday, October 25, 1967, while responding to a domestic disturbance call. As he drove up to the house the man open fired with a rifle, striking Deputy Gates four times. The suspect was shot and killed by return fire from other officers. Deputy Gates was transported to Methodist Hospital in Des Moines where he succumbed to his injuries.

Deputy Gates was 54 years old.
