Captain Heimbecker and Corporal Hermann were transporting prisoners by leased airplane from Woodbury County Jail to state facilities at Oakdale and Mount Pleasant, Iowa on June 11, 1993. The last stop was at Fort Madison, Iowa where prisoner Armando Cardenas was picked up to be returned to the Woodbury County Jail. Upon departure from the Fort Madison airport the plane crashed, killing both Captain Heimbecker and Corporal Hermann. The prisoner was seriously injured but did survive the crash.
