Chief Deputy Otto was killed Thursday, October 8, 1981, at 0200 hours when a section of porch collapsed, crushing him. Chief Deputy Otto and other officers had responded to a location. He parked his patrol car and went to the porch of the home. His patrol car then rolled into the porch, knocking it down. The porch roof fell onto Chief Deputy Otto causing fatal injuries.

Chief Otto was 39 years old.
