Officer Roberts was injured on Monday, May 1, 1972, when he was struck by an Omaha, Nebraska, patrol car that had chased a suspect into Council Bluffs. Officer Roberts was directing traffic in the rain when the accident occurred. Officer Roberts succumbed to his injuries Thursday, October 24, 1974. He remained in the hospital from the time of the accident until his death.

Officer Roberts was 29 years old.
