Special Officer Shoemaker was shot and killed on May 17, 1925, while conducting a railroad check in Missouri Valley, Iowa. Special Officer Shoemaker came across nine men riding in a gondola car. Special Officer Shoemaker turned his flashlight on them and demanded to know what they were doing. One man drew a gun and shot Special Officer Shoemaker. The suspect then fired three more shots at Special Officer Shoemaker while he lay against the wounded suspect.
Special Officer Shoemaker was employed by the Union Pacific Railroad Police Department.
