The Iowa Department of Public Safety Peace Officer Memorial Page Remembers . . .

Sergeant Howard James Snider

On June 17, 2012, Ames Police Sergeant Howard Snider was boating at Lake Geode with his daughter and had jumped into the lake to swim to a boat that had drifted away from the dock. His 11-year-old daughter was in the boat.

While swimming to the boat, he disappeared under the water and did not resurface.

The Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner ruled the cause of Sergeant Snider’s death to be accidental drowning in the setting of a pulmonary embolism.  The State Medical Examiner ruled the pulmonary embolism was caused by an injury he sustained on-duty several days earlier prior to his death.

Sergeant Snider served as a law enforcement officer in the State of Iowa for 23 years.
