STEVEN L. PONSETTO, EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Steven L. Ponsetto was appointed Executive Officer to the Commissioner of Public Safety on March 2, 2011, by Commissioner Larry L. Noble.

Steve has worked in many disciplines since joining the Iowa Department of Public Safety in 1980 as a Capitol Police Officer. In 1981, Steve transferred to the State Patrol and was stationed at District 2 in Indianola. While with the State Patrol Steve was a Technical Accident Investigator and Tactical Team Member. In 1987, Steve was assigned to the State Patrol's Vehicle Theft Unit in Des Moines. In 1991, Steve transferred to the Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) and was stationed in Osceola.

While in DCI Steve was assigned to the Major Crimes and Intelligence Units. In 1998, Steve transferred to the department's Training Bureau where he was the curriculum coordinator for the DPS Basic Academy.

In 2002, Steve was selected to coordinate the newly created Anti-Money Laundering Initiative in the Intelligence Bureau. In 2004, Steve was promoted to Special Agent in Charge in the Division of Intelligence and Fusion Center where he supervised the Field Intelligence Operations Bureau and the Analysis Bureau until his recent selection as Executive Officer.

Steve grew up in Newton, Iowa and graduated from Newton High School in 1977. Steve is a graduate of Des Moines Area Community College and Upper Iowa University. In 2003, Steve graduated from the FBI National Academy in Quantico, VA and in 2007 from the Northwestern School of Police Staff and Command.
