DPS Basic Academy The Iowa Department of Public Safety's basic training academy is conducted at the Camp Dodge military facility located in Johnston, Iowa. Subjects studied during the academy range from laws of arrest, search and seizure, defensive tactics, arrest techniques, precision driving, firearms, emergency management services, criminal law, and motor vehicle law. The DPS Academy is staffed by a Camp Commander, Assistant Camp Commander in Charge of Operations, Assistant Camp Commander in Charge of Administration, a Senior Drill Instructor, and several Assistant Drill Instructors. During the academy, all training materials, meals, and lodging are furnished at no cost to the recruits. Recruits receive a salary during academy training. The academy runs from 8:00 a.m. Monday morning until approximately 5:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon. Recruits are required to stay on complex Monday through Friday but may go home on the weekends. Upon graduation
from the DPS Academy, each officer will complete approximately 6 months
of field training experience with their hiring division. Officers
are assigned to any one of Iowa's 99 counties with the Iowa State
Patrol's 16 Districts, the Division of Criminal Investigation's 4
Zones, the Division of Narcotics Enforcement's 4 Zones, or the State
