Military Partnership The Iowa Department of Public Safety recognizes the significant training, education and invaluable experience the military provides to its service members. Many of the characteristics and values the military refines in individuals is exactly what often makes them a perfect fit for a career in law enforcement! The Department continuously has many officers who are members of the Reserves or National Guard as well as several prior service and retired personnel. Military trainng is a tremendous asset to peace officers. Although specific military occupational skills vary, the core value and principles you have developed in the military are critical in your success as a peace officer. Principles such as leadership, selfless service, individual responsibility and accountability, integrity, and loyalty are just a few of the many character traits developed by the military that will greatly assist you. Your training and abilities to function independently or as part of a team in an environment with a clear chain of command and structure are essential elements both in the military and in law enforcement. Additionally, your successfull completion of basic combat training and familiarization with weapons will assistt your successful graduation from the Basic Academy. The Basic Academy is paramiltary in nature and is conducted at Camp Dodge (National Guard Base) located in Johnston, Iowa. In addition to the Basic Academy, much of the Department's training is also conducted on-base. Military Incentives: The Iowa Department of Public Safety realizes the important role these peace officer/service members play in both serving the citizens of Iowa as well as defending the nation. The Department provides for military leave (deployments, annual training, etc.) when the service memberrs are called upon. Additionally, the Montgomery G.I. Bill can be used while attending the Basic Academy as well as during field probationary training. If you qualify in accordance with the Iowa Code, you could receive 5 or 10 veteran hiring preference points. Participation in the U.S. Army PaYS Program: The Iowa Department of Public Safety is a partner withthe U.S. Army's Partnership for Youth Success (PaYS) Program. This program allows new enlistees to connect with the Iowa Department of Public Safety during their initial enlistment with the U.S. Army or the U.S. Army Reserves. The soldiers participating in the PaYS Program are given the opportunity to interview or appy for positions in law enforcement at the completion of their initial enlistment (Regular Army) or Initial Active Duty for Training (IADT) (Reserves).
