After the Fire! Returning to Normal
FEMA's guide for those who've survived a home fire.

The Arson and Explosives Bureau is a component of the Fire Marshal Division that conducts examinations of fire scenes and explosions to determine origin and cause and conducts criminal investigations directed toward arrest and prosecution.  There are ten Special Agents and one Special Agent in Charge assigned to the Arson and Explosives Bureau.  The main duty of the Arson and Explosive Bureau is to assist local Fire Departments, Police Departments and Sheriff’s Department with investigations of fire scenes to determine if a crime has been committed and bring the case to a successful resolution.

The Arson and Explosives Bureau also has statewide responsibility for the investigation of bombings and other explosive devices and inspects and licenses explosive storage facilities and investigates blasting complaints.  Eleven Fire Marshal staff are also certified Bomb Technicians and respond to explosive related incidents, suspected devices and packages to investigate and render the items safe.  The Bureau also will collect unwanted or damaged ammunition, old explosives and other explosive items or components for safe disposal.

If you are requesting information regarding obtaining a license to conduct blasting or the storage of explosives within the state, please contact our office at (515) 725-6178 or e-mail us at

The Bureau also maintains an Arson Hotline for citizens to use to provide information that may be helpful in the resolution of suspected arson cases.

The Arson Hotline number is 1-800-532-1459.
