Arson and Explosives Bureau The Arson and Explosives Bureau examines fire scenes and explosions to determine cause and conducts criminal investigations directed toward arrest and prosecution. It also has statewide responsibility for the investigation of bombings and other explosive devices and inspects and licenses explosive storage facilities. If you are requesting information regarding obtaining a license to conduct blasting or the storage of explosives within the state, please contact our office at 515-725-6178 or e-mail us at fminfo@dps.state.ia.us. The 871 cases investigated in 1994 represents the highest one year total ever recorded by the Fire Marshal Division. This unfortunately reflects an increase in arson and explosives incidents statewide. An annual two-week Fire/Arson School is conducted by this bureau for local fire and law enforcement officials. In addition, several classes are held around the state to provide local officials the opportunity to see various types of explosives, and to give them directions for safe and proper responses to such incidents. The Bureau also maintains an Arson Hotline for citizens to use to provide information that may be helpful in the resolution of suspected arson cases. The Arson Hotline number is 1-800-532-1459.
