Alarm System Contractor and Installer Certification

HomeBaseIowa

Home Base Iowa Act

The state of Iowa does not regulate portable fire extinguisher inspections or testing. Please check with the local jurisdictions regarding any requirements.

Iowa License Management System (ILMS)

All new and renewal applications are now processed online through the Iowa License Management System at iowa.imagetrendlicense.com. Please email sfmlicense@dps.state.ia.us with questions regarding the licensing programs.

Businesses must submit the Alarm System Contractor form and upload a copy of the most current certificate of liability insurance. The COL must show coverage amounts of $1M per occurance, $1M property damage, and $500K per person.
NOTE: it is the licensee's responsibility to make sure a current COL has been uploaded online. A mailed copy from the insurance company does not meet this requirement.

Responsible Managing Employees (RME) must submit the Alarm System RME form and upload a copy of their current qualifying certification as specified in the matrix below.

Installers, maintenance workers, and inspection/testing workers must submit the Alarm System Installer form and upload a copy of their current qualifying certifications as specified in the matrix below.

Both RMEs and Installers are required to submit one fingerprint card by mail at the time of application or renewal.

Trainees are required to obtain an installer assistant license. They must submit the Alarm System Installer Assistant form. There is no additional documentation required. Trainees are required to submit one fingerprint card by mail at the time of application and upon the third application for renewal.

All fees are calculated at the time forms are submitted. Payments can be made online by debit/credit card or eCheck or by mailing a check payable to the Iowa State Fire Marshal Division at 215 E 7th Street, Des Moines, IA 50319.
