Live Fire Skills

This Live Fire Skills training program provides firefighters the opportunity to gain the essential live fire skills required for FFI and FFII, while addressing the skills previously signed off by the chief officer on their department.

The following FFI and FFII skills will be covered:

  • Extinguishment of Class A & B type fires using the appropriate extinguisher.
  • Extinguish or control piles of Class A materials.
  • Extinguish or control a vehicle fire and storage container fire.
  • Use the Interior Fire Attack Simulator for below-grade, at-grade, & above-grade fire attack inside a structure.
  • Exterior combustible liquids fire of at least 100 sq. ft. using foam fire stream.
  • Simulated fire involving energized electricalcomponents.
  • Simulated fire involving flammable gas cylinders.

This program is offered FREE OF CHARGE in the Spring and the Fall each year, so watch the web site and mail for information and registration.

Regional Fire Schools

The Fire Service Training Bureau cooperates with several community colleges and their planning committees regarding regional fire schools. The Bureau offers courses, certification exams, and sets up the Iowa Fire Service Bookstore, to make the latest in training manuals and videos available to the regional fire school attendees.

National Fire Academy Courses

National Fire Academy Direct Delivery and Regional Delivery courses are also coordinated and provided through the Fire Service Training Bureau. The Fire Service Training Bureau schedules and facilitates these courses for the Iowa Fire Service. A portion of the courses are usually held at the Annual State Fire School. Some are hosted as weekend activities at the Training Bureau, and some are offered to our Community College partners to be held in conjunction with their Regional Fire Schools, or as stand alone activities.
