About the Fire Service Training Bureau

Mission Statement

"To establish credibility in providing quality education, training, certification, and professional consultation to Iowa's fire service and other emergency responders in a manner that reflects commitment, integrity, and contributes to the reduction of morbidity, mortality, and property loss from fire and other hazards."


The Fire Service Training Bureau is Iowa’s designated state fire academy, training Iowa’s firefighters since 1923. The Bureau provides quality training and education for Iowa’s fire and emergency services.

The Bureau provides a variety of training courses, certification, and other services through the following programs:

The Fire Service Training Bureau is committed to meeting the needs of Iowa's fire service by emphasizing up-to-date, recognized training, partnerships with the community college districts, as well as in-house training opportunities.

The Fire Service Training Bureau accomplishes its mission through a variety of core functions.  These core functions include:

  • Promote safety in all aspects of fire and emergency service training and response.
  • Provide and coordinate training ranging from basic skills to more advanced specialized topics.
  • Offer professional certification through a program accredited by the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) and the National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications (ProBoard).
  • Act as the statewide point of contact and coordination for federal fire programs.
  • Provide a leadership role in developing and implementing new techniques and technologies in firefighting and emergency response.
  • Distribute training materials through the Iowa Fire Service Bookstore.
  • Provide research, technical assistance, and support.

Iowa Fire Service Bookstore Header

The Fire Service Training Bureau offers training materials and manuals through the Iowa Fire Service Bookstore.  Our bookstore is dedicated to providing the Iowa fire service with the most current, accurate and useful references available from the following publishers:

Educational materials are always available by direct mail order services at the Fire Service Training Bureau.

Purchases may be made with credit cards, checks, cash, or charged to fire departments.

All proceeds from the purchase of educational materials from the IFSB stay in the Iowa fire service so that the benefit of guidance and information about firefighter safety, effective fire prevention and protection, and many other services may continue to be provided to individuals and fire departments.

Look for the Iowa Fire Service Bookstore at the State and Regional Fire Schools and receive a 10% discount on the purchase of any books.

Awards & Recognition Header

Each year recognition is given to individuals of the fire service whose exemplary performance has contributed significantly to the safety and protection of the communities and citizens of Iowa. The following Governor's Awards for outstanding contribution to the state of Iowa are presented every year:

  • Arson Investigator of the Year
  • Commitment to Community Service Award of the Year
  • Firefighter of the Year
  • Fire Prevention Officer of the Year

Nomination letters should be sent to the Fire Service Training Bureau, attention Governor's Award Committee.
