The Iowa Department of Public Safety conducts a rigorous training academy for its newly hired peace officer candidates. The academy is held at the Camp Dodge military facility in Johnston, Iowa. Johnston is a suburb north of Des Moines. To learn more about the DPS academy, click here.

The Iowa Department of Public Safety has a proud tradition of serving and protecting the people of Iowa. With 900 employees, including over 600 peace officers, the Department is organized in five divisions:

The Department works in close cooperation with federal and local law enforcement officials in order to maximize effectiveness of operations. In addition to law enforcement, the Department brings help and reassurance to individuals and families often in crisis situations.

Civilian Positions

Civilian employees make up the remaining positions within the Department of Public Safety. These employees handle jobs from Clerk Typist to Criminalist and from Communications Specialist to Budget Analyst. Candidates for civilian positions within state government must meet qualifications established by the Merit Employment System of the Iowa Department of Administrative Services.
