Special Agent II


Current Department of Public Safety sworn officers are provided the opportunity to apply for Special Agent II positions prior to any opening being filled from outside the Department.

Job Description

Under general supervision, Special Agents in the Division of Narcotics Enforcement are charged with the primary responsibility of enforcing laws in the state of Iowa and the regulation of narcotics enforcement.

Job duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Collects, preserves, and records evidence; identifies and interviews involved persons, and establishes the basis for criminal process.
  • Is proficient in the law enforcement techniques which may include the development of informants, undercover techniques, use of special equipment,and irregular work hours when on special assignment.
  • Prepares and testifies in court to present the facts surrounding any civil, criminal or departmental action.
  • Serves arrest warrants and takes individuals into custody as required by the court and/or Iowa Code.
  • Operates undercover to secure evidence and information; maintain surveillance of persons or established locations.
  • Obtains information and gathers facts through such methods as interviewing witnesses, interrogating witnesses, interrogating suspects, contacting informants, and interacting with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants for the position of Special Agent with the Division of Narcotics Enforcement must:

  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Be at least twenty-two (22) years of age at the time of graduation from the Department's training academy
  • Be in acceptable physical and mental condition to perform his or her duties under physically demanding conditions
  • Possess a Bachelor of Arts/Science degree from an accredited college or university, preferably in criminal justice, political science, business, social science, accounting or other related fields;
    OR
    Have three (3) years of law enforcement experience as a sworn federal, state, or local police officer and hold an Associate in Arts degree from an accredited college or university;
    OR
    Have three (3) years of law enforcement experience as a sworn federal, state, or local police officer and have at least sixty (60) semester hours (or equivalent quarter hours) from an accredited college or university;
    OR
    Have five (5) years of law enforcement experience as a sworn federal, state, or local peace officer.
  • Have uncorrected vision no worse than 20/100 in each eye, corrected to 20/20 in each eye.
  • Have normal color vision as prescribed by Iowa Law Enforcement Academy Rules:  Color vision is determined by the American Optical Company, Pseudo Plates test, and requires correct identification of 10 out of 14 test plates.
  • Have normal hearing in each ear.  Hearing is considered normal when hearing sensitivity thresholds are within 25db measured at 1000Hz, 2000Hz, and 3000Hz averaged together.

Effective January 1, 2012 - Peace Officer Pay Plan

  • $1,990.40 to $2,992.00 (bi-weekly)
  • $51,750.40 to $77,792.00 (annually)

While attending the Department's Training Academy, candidates are paid $1311.20 ($16.39 per hour - bi-weekly).
